Question about AHI from a novice.

Post by MichaelGettel » Fri Nov 23, 2007 6:10 pm

Hello!
So, being new to all of this, I am hoping some of you might enlighten me a bit about my AHI index. After 9 days of theraphy at home, my AHI average is 2.5. I'm guessing you want this number to be low, but am I in the ballpark here? I know I'm sleeping better, so this counts for a lot on its own!

Thanks for your insight.
Kind regards,
Michael

That's great! According to Bill, our moderator and resident expert, anything under 5 is good.

Wow! I'm impressed. I thought I was doing well till I got my software & looked at my leak rate. Are you feeling a difference & getting enough sleep too?

Although the rule of thumb is to maintain an AHI (apnea hypopnea index) under 5, I don't think this forum has a "moderator".

AHI = the number of apneas plus the number of hypopneas per hour, it is a rate averaged over the period spent sleeping.

An AHI of 2.5 is good ... and sleeping better does count for a lot.

Congrats!

Aren't our "moderators" those listed as "moderators," forumadmin, Titrator, Admins?

You don't see them posting very often, do you?
And Bill Bolton's name isn't in there.....neither is mine or DreamStalkers.

I suppose that technically, you are correct ... but in practicality, what makes this forum so great IMO, is that it is NOT moderated (we can discuss whatever we want without being bullied or otherwise censored.

The CRNP at my Sleep Lab said they would like to get my AHI under 5-7. Even at 17 cm of pressure I am still experiencing up to 15.3 AHI. They recently increased my pressure to 18 cm to try to get it down under 7.

Current BiPAP Pressure Settings: IPAP = 18, EPAP = 15

That looks pretty good, at least it didn't completely fall apart.

Does it kind of sort of match what you're supposed to get for your mask? If you have the paperwork that would have come with the mask, it'll give you an idea of what it should be... otherwise somewhere around here is a leak rate page that DSM put together... which would also give you a guideline.

'Cause the first thing to fix is leaks... especially at high pressures.
