Altitude on the road

Post by jimbassett » Sat Oct 13, 2007 3:26 pm

I have been on the road traveling for almost a month. I am now in the high country of Colorado for a week or so. I am using my ResMed S8 Vantage in my motorhome. At an altitude of 9000ft it seems like I cannot get quite enough air. Should I bump the pressure up some? I am using it in cpap at 10 cm. I thought the S8 was altitude compensated, but evidently not.

OH! The turning leaves have been producing the most vivid colors. That in and of itself puts a person on a "Rockey Mountain High".

Thanks for any info. Happy Sleeping jim

After I toured with my Resmed visiting lots of different altitudes it lost power and needed fixing. Sounds like the same might be happening with yours.

Boy I'd love to know the answer to that. I'm at sea level here, and I have no idea what altitude Wetumpka, AL is... I'm going there in a few weeks.

If anyone knows how to set an APAP for altitude, please weigh in.

Must go look up altitude of Wetumpka...

Thanks!
Babs

I currently have a stash of Nasal Aire II cannulas in Small or Extra Small. Please PM me if you would like them. I'm interested in bartering for something strange and wonderful that I don't currently own. Or a Large size NAII cannula. :)

Elevation is the term I want, not altitude. That would help....

Okay, I'm actually at 262 feet. Surprised me. Wetumpka is at 177 feet. Do you think I need to worry about re-setting my machine?

Thanks much!
Barbara

The "auto" S8 models (Elite/Autoset and Vantage/Spirit) have automatic altitude sensing but the other S8 models (Compact and Escape/Lightweight) must be manually set to the desired altitude range.

For the manual models, altitude setting is on the normal patient menu.

Cheers,

Bill

p.34 of the Resmed S8 AutoSet Vantage:
ALTITUDE CHANGES
Your S8 AUTOSET VANTAGE automatically adjusts to changes in altitude up to 8500' (2591 m).
You've taken your Vantage higher than it can automatically adjust to.

Babs, on your Resperonics machine, there is an altitude adjustment in the setup menu. When I got into mine after I got it, for some reason they had it set to the highest altitude, which shows on screen as three mountains. I'm at a low altitude, so I adjusted it to the lowest which is one mountain looking thing.

Huh! Never noticed that. Thanks much! You think 177 feet and 260 feet both equate to Small Mountain?

Thanks!!!

If you were using the machine you have in your "Sig", with the software you would know if your treatment need to be changed on the fly. I'd want to know day by day if my treatment was working, espessally if I was driving. Jim

Check your data via the LED screen. That should give you a clue whether you need to up your pressure whilst at that altitude.

Left & Right button held down for 3-4 seconds in case you weren't aware of it. Button use pretty self-explanatory from then on.

If you do need to change your pressure and don't know how someone can PM you w/the instructions. Just let us know.

Altitude and Remstar Apap

Post by Alag8r » Mon Nov 19, 2007 1:45 pm

I'm having similar issues that started with my trip to the Colorado mountains a few days ago. Since I'm here for two weeks, I hope to get it worked out. Before the trip, my AHI was averaging about 3.5; now it has zoomed up to around 14 since I've been here. My max pressure was set on 18 -- Encore Pro shows that I've been hitting it every night on this trip, so I bumped it up to 20 last night -- AHI actually went a little higher. I also increased the humidifier from 1 to 2. I think I'll increase the max pressure to 22 tonite and see what happens. I also tried to increase the minimum by 0.5, but that was uncomfortable, so I reset it. Hopefully, I'm on the right track, but any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome to the Rockies.

I believe most of the machines auto-adjust up to about 8000 (or maybe it's 8300 ft.)
Depending on what your minimum pressure is and your altitude, you might want to bump the bottom pressure up. I think the max ceiling on the APAP machines is 20 cm.
Don't rule out switching to CPAP mode, too.

Thanks Den -- I did bump up the minimum pressure and it seemed to help a bit. I'll try raising it some more and using the CPAP mode if that doesn't work. Al
