Quietest interface?

Post by KenC » Wed Oct 17, 2007 2:05 pm

I've been using CPAP for a few days using a swift II interface. It is actually working out pretty well (I can sleep all night with it on), but my wife says it is too noisy for her to sleep. She says the noise is coming from the interface, not the machine (she says it sounds like a highly amplified Darth Vader).

The odd thing is, she says it wasn't nearly that loud the first night. This lead me to believe that she was hearing a leak, but I created a couple of intentional leaks, and she says no, it's not constant like the "whistle" from a leak, but rather the Darth Vader breathing.

I've tried disassembling the swift II and cleaning the vent holes, but that didn't help.

Any ideas?

What is the quietest interface out there? The nasal pillows seem to work well for me, but I'll switch if I have to.

Swift 2 will mak a sort of slight whistle sound if the seal rings get a little askew. It's the part that the head gear attaches to. I usually have to adjust mine by slightly pushing the headgear rings toward each other. I have become proficiant at doing this while I am sleeping. This stops the noise and back to sleepy land.

I also think the Optilife nasal mask is very quiet if you canstand to wear it all night. I am a side sleeper and when I toss and turn the seall usually broke and I would have to adjust.

I have used 5 pillow type masks. The Swift was by far the loudest. I have also used the Aura...also too loud for me (but comfortable). Bravo is very quiet but I could never ever get it to seal even after hours of playing with it. CL2 and Optilife are a tossup for me. The exhaust on the CL2 is virtually silent but there is a little of the "Darth Vader" effect. The Optilife has no Darth Vader sound but the exhaust makes a very slight sound. The only two that my wife ever complained about were the Swift and the Aura. My current favorite is the Optilife.

The Soyala nasal mask is the quietest one I've ever tried.

without a doubt, the Soyala:

it tends to run on the small size of things, if you get it too small it can leave a nice divot on your nose, better to get it larger so the top rides higher then you won't have that problem.

I wore a Medium in a UM, UMII, ComfortGel etc., I went with a large in the Soyala, been using mine every night now for about a year. Got a spare nasal and full face in the drawer.

The full face version is just as quiet.
someday science will catch up to what I'm saying...

Soyala nasal mask here as well, although I was unable to keep using it because it caused a bridge of nose sore. But, I know many people do not have that issue. I actually thought the machine was not on it was so quiet.

Also, if your DME says they have never heard of it, call the Somnotech people (distributor of soyala) and see if they have a record of dealing with the DME before. I had to do this for Lincare. The local office said they have never heard of it and I could not get it. I called Lincare corporate, they said they did have a contract with Somnotech and emailed the local office the same day providing the necessary information (parts numbers I think).

The quietest nasal pillow interface in my experience is the Bravo...Its much quieter than the Swift II and is not so hard to breathe against like the Swift/Swift II.
