Nasal Aire II & Nasal bleeding
Nasal Aire II & Nasal bleeding
Okay, I know there's a bunch of NON NAII users who will weigh in on this and tell me I should stop and blah blah blah. This thread is not for you.
This thread is for Rosemary, and Jerry and all the other NAII users.
I've noticed a little bit of bleeding in my nostrils. I've had it for a few months, and it's really been completely non-painful, so I just ignore it. It mostly manifests as a dried scab of blood that I notice when I blow my nose, then I explore and find this dried blood.
Last month, my PCP looked up my nose and didn't like what she saw, and told me to use Neosporin inside my nose. I did it once, then ignored it. It doesn't hurt, doesn't bother me, why worry?
Well, Monday night I was minding my own business when I had to blow my nose, and something caught my eye as I was throwing the tissue out. I opened it and it was bright pink with blood! Obviously not enough blood to make it RED, but enough to make the tissue pretty pink. I explored, couldn't find that I was DRIPPING BLOOD, and wasn't in any pain, so I just blew it off. So to speak.
Anyone else having any blood? I got my NAII from a gal who said she got a major nasal irritation from it, and it didn't heal for two months. I haven't had any irritation, just this little bit of blood. I'm not entirely sure where it's coming from. I can't find a wound. But then again, I can't SEE up there, either.
So, any other NAII users seeing blood?
Thanks!
Babette

As a NA II user, for about two years, I can only tell you, I never had that problem.
My first inclination, check your humidifier and turn it up just a little.
Good Luck, and sleep tight.

I started my NA II on 7-26-07 and have been using my humidifier turned off in passover mode the whole time. Trying to keep it a bit dry to hold down leaks as we have discussed before. Last week I had the same thing, I blew my nose and got a bit of blood (first time). I turned the humidifier to 1 since then and no more problems. I really expected problems with leaks when I turned on the humidifier but so far no more problems, in fact my left nare no longer stings. My leak data has not increased. I do wash with Nealmed every night at least 1 hour before bedtime. I really can't imagine having to change from my NAII. Even when I am stopped up a bit I can put it on and breathe. My numbers have been so good since the change.
By the way have you gotten up the nerve to install Encore? Just curious and I do know you have been busy.

Never any blood
I've never seen any blood, but do think it made a sore. It was strange to me because I would have expected it when I first began using it, this was like three weeks into using it exclusively.
I switched masks for a week, then went back to it. So far it's my favorite!

I can get blood from flushing my nose too hard or from an excessively dry place (colorado ) when I am there
The nasal aire II in south florida with its high humidity does not irratate me at all .
Ocassional blood from flushing does not disturb me but if your doctor has a concern over what he sees you need to heed it

I wore the Nasal-aire II with a pressure of 18 never had any blood from it. Since it's made from silicone, I doubt it can cause a problem.
I had some blood when I wore the Activa and nasal spray, however. I think the spray probably caused it.
If you have anything growing in your nose, no matter how small, biopsy it without delay. Your Nasal aire could be rubbing up against something growing inside. Give your nose a break to see what might be going on inside. Also get your blood pressure checked. High blood pressude can cause broken blood vessels.

Hey Gang, thanks for all the words of wisdom!
I've been a Flonase addict since 1998. Never had any blood from that before.
I HAVE recently tried to be more regular with the NeilMed bottle (is it still a neti pot if it's a bottle?). And occasionally I get it a bit too hot. Could be causing my irritation. Will work harder to make sure the water doesn't get that hot.
Thanks for the tip on the bacitracin! I've used it before, but switched to neosporin after getting the opposite tip (pre-cpap, for another situation). Maybe I'll have both on hand for different needs...
I think the "wound" is probably only in my left nostril, since upon exploration, that's where I'm finding a small scab. Yes folks, isn't this gross? Talking about picking your nose on the internet... (shakes head and sighs)
And Jerry, I turned my HH up to 1 last night after using it Passover since April. So far, no rainout. No pink in the tissue this AM, but then, I've only seen pink that one night. I did manage to move the machine lower than my head finally - rearranged the whole bedroom and now the machine is on the opposite side of the bed, on a bookshelf that is substantially lower than my head. Now I need a longer hose... Maybe I'll test drive a setting of 2 tonight. I also slept with the room heater on, to raise the ambient room temperature to help with any rainout problems.
And NO... Still haven't installed anything... It's sitting right here on the desk staring me in the face. Maybe I'll bite the bullet, phone a friend, and get it done tonight. Maybe.
LOL and Thanks!

I currently have a stash of Nasal Aire II cannulas in Small or Extra Small. Please PM me if you would like them. I'm interested in bartering for something strange and wonderful that I don't currently own. Or a Large size NAII cannula.

Here is a tip for you on getting the water to hot on the nasal rinse. My ENT guy as well as the instructions in the Neilmed says to use distilled water. I think one time you said you used tap water but this works eather way. I got one of the little coil heaters that they use to heat water for tea or instant coffee (REI or Walmart). With cold (Room Temp.) water I drop the little heater in a cup of water and plug it in for 2 1/2 min. Temperture of the water is always just right. Have not burned my sinuses since.

Hi BABETTE , I am trying my Nasal Air 11 tonight for the first time, I had it on earlier for the first time just trying to get it adjusted for the first time and I noticed that the nasal pillow system is very hard and stiff, (nothing at all like the soft Swift 11 nasal pillow system ) , they seem very hard to get in the nares as I have narrow nares, that's to be expected I guess, still they seen huge, lol. I also have a deviated system so I will wear it tonight and report back tomorrow. I have never had any nose bleeds with the Swift 11, the bridge of my nose gets extremely sore from having to keep the straps real snug so the pillow system will stay in place and I do have excessive dry nostrils. I just put the Ayr gel inside my nose and a little around the outside... I have always slept with my HH on 1. Goodluck & Keep us posted
Blood from One Nostril or Both ???
Babette, I forgot to ask and I don't think you mentioned it either, are you bleeding from both nostrils or just one ? Do you have a deviated septum ? I do and I forgot to mention that nasal pillow systems aren't reccomended for people with a deviated septum ! I still use it anyway as the pillow system is all I can tolerate... Also, I was thinking, have you taken a Q-Tip (dry) and tried to find out where the blood is coming from ? If so, is it in the front part of the nostril or way in the back ??? Even before starting CPAP use 3 months ago, I would always have blood, (a little bit) from way in the back of my nose from excessive dryness I guess, anyway just hope you get better!

Sleepy, make sure you have the correct size. Correct size is key with that mask. It shoul be very soft and comfortable and not leak. Use a little AYR gel the first time or two. The Nasal Aire was my all time favorite mask before the Hybrid. I had to buy 2 of them to get the correct size but the masks comes with all of the sizes now (or at least 3 cannulas) in the tray. My wife orders the three sizes she wants and trades the other 2 cannulas.
The 3 size tray is only 5 dollars more than the one single size, so thats a no brainer. I found a try will all 6 sizes for a few dollars more and she got her small. Since I'm a large and she's a small, we can't get both in the three size tray. We make our own headgear or buy it the breathewear set,
http://www.breathewear.com/products/breatheband.html or the chinstrap
http://www.breathewear.com/products/chinstrapvs.html (or just make your own on your favorite chinstrap with 2 elastic straps to hold the tubing).

When I put water in my neti pot, I use reverse osmosis water. I nuke it for 20 seconds only. It makes it just warm enough to dissolve the salt while I wash my face. Then I rinse my sinuses. I haven't had any problems with burning anything. Also, I only use the salt designed for neti pots. I read other salts can be too strong. Maybe it's a gimmick to get you to pay $6 for a jar of salt.

Hey kids! So, no bloody tissues this past week. I've survived the HH on 1, with no rainout problems. I'm sure lowering the machine below my head helped that.
I still have a bit of a scab in my left nostril, but it's not bothering me, so I try not to bother it.
I don't even KNOW what a deviated septum is - I still need to go see an ENT. It's on the list of things I must do, but work has swallowed my brain, so...
I highly recommend buying the NAII in the "all six sizes" pack, and then swapping your unwanted prongs with friends. I've got a list of NAII users on this forum that I can swap with. I found it very reasonably priced at Direct Home Medical. I can't send you the link when I'm "guesting" here, but you can find them on Google.
Cheers,
Babs
