Is it OK to mouth breath when you are using a FF mask?

Post by dudley_doright » Sat Sep 29, 2007 8:41 pm

I am getting up in the middle of the night with dry mouth. I know that I am mouth breathing, but I am using a Mirage FF mask. Is it OK?
In the last week or two I have been getting a high leak % thruout the night.
What should I do? HELP

I don't use the Mirage FF mask, but do use a Fisher & Paykel ff mask. I have found when my mouth is really dry I don't have the humidifier set high enough. I guess part of it is the rooms humidity level, as some nights I can go with a setting of 1 and other nights I wake up with a really dry mouth and my lips feel tight and I can kick up the humidifier to a 3 and go back to sleep and the problem seems to be fixed.

It is OK to mouthbreath, with a good fitting FF mask. That doesn't mean it preferred even then. Humans weren't designed to mouthbreath, dogs however were. Fido is meant to mouthbreath, it helps him cool off, seeing he doesn't have sweat glands for cooling.

Humans lose to much moisture breathing through their mouths, it's not natural. If you have a high leak rate, like you say you do, then you need to fix that. it could be high enough to hurt your treatment. Jim

Good point goofpoint, I totally missed the high leak rate!!

Can you figure out what is causing the leaks? Does the mask need replaced with a new one?

I also use the UMFF, and when I didn't get it adjusted properly it would leak (pressure 20) and cause dry mouth. After I found the sweet spot(adjusting mask per instructions on this forum) no more dry mouth. Regards

Do you drool? If so the drool might be compromising your seal causing the leak.

Not that I'VE ever done that! Drool? Moi???
