I really want a Soyola, I think

Post by Lee Lee » Fri Sep 14, 2007 11:20 am

I want to try the Soyola nasal mask. I've toyed around with the idea, but haven't taken the plunge. I'm gonna have to pay for this one out my pocket, so I'm trying to be careful.
I've read a ton of stuff about it, but I keep hearing people talk about it hurting the bridge of their nose. Almost every post mentions it. I hate it when the bridge of my nose is irritated!
Has anyone gotten a Soyala and never had the problem? Did you just open it out of the box and love it?
I have an Activa now and it's alright. I just can't nestle down into my pillow because it's so bulky . I end up with a stiff neck, or my hand under my face to keep from pushing the mask around.
It seals great, and I've gotten use to the face sucking motions it makes.
I just long for something lighter. Also, I read a post by Snoredog that intriqued me. He said the C02 clears more quickly. I like the thought of that.

That just sounds wrong....

I love the soyala. If you use a med in the activa you will want a large in the soyala. That is my only fault the large is almost too small for me. I ordered another one anyway just to have a spare. I wish the DMEs could get them for us, but they say they don't have a source. I say GO FOR IT! jim

I used the Soyala the night of my sleep study. I was offered four masks and 3 of them were excruciating. The Soyala was the best of the lot. It turns out that a nasal mask presses painfully against my face in the cheek area, so a pillows mask is better for me. But if I had to choose a nasal mask, I'd probably go for the Soyala based on the one night I used it. It was nice and quiet, too. It probably depends on how your face is shaped.

Soyala is so nice

I also used the Activa and although I was accustomed to it, I was interested in a Soyala. I asked the DME to see about getting me one. She did get one for me and we guessed at the size to order. Thankfully it fits wonderfully and is completely quiet. It is small and I sleep on my stomach with it.
I love this mask.

I recommend it.

I think you misunderstood what I said, I said the Soyala appears to retain MORE CO2 compared to other masks.

That higher retention rate results in a lower intentional leak rate which may be one of the reasons why it comes in so quiet compared to other interfaces.

That higher retention rate may also be of benefit or a problem depending on your particular sleep disorder. If you understand CO2's role in maintaining our respiratory drive via chemoreceptors it can under the right circumstances encourage you to breathe such as in the case of a shallow breather or person that forgets to breathe. This is the concept behind the AdaptSV machines, they work by knowing a mask's leak rate either by learning or specifying a particular type. Once they know that washout rate they can manipulate respiratory volume to stabilize breathing, the target events go away upon that stabilization.

On the opposite end of that scale is the Hybrid, it has a much higher leak rate and more likely to flush out CO2 at a faster rate. The result is you retain less CO2, if you are a lazy or shallow breather that may adversely impact your breathing and possibly the number of events seen.

Make sure you get the Soyala sized properly, too small and it will have to ride down on your nose bridge to be usable, that can put too much pressure across the bridge of your nose and lead to a red mark or divot. The top part of the mask needs to ride at the center of the pupils of the eyes. This is a typical finding with most masks.

If you hold a ruler up in a mirror you should be able to find your vertical dimension easily.

FYI: The Large Soyala measures 2.25" on the cushion for that vertical dimension. Measuring my face I get 2-5/16 to 2-3/8" to the center of my upper lip where that cushion will land.

I used a Medium-Standard in a UltraMirage and other nasal masks and a Large in Soyala, so it tends to run on the small size compared to other masks. I would imagine a Small Soyala would be a Petite compared to others.

Don't get one too small, your nose will never forgive you.
someday science will catch up to what I'm saying...

Dog, I swear, you are the sharpest crayon in the box! I don't know how I got it so wrong.
You amaze me with your vast knowledge of most things Apnea related. You make me realize how much I have to learn.
That said, I am indeed a shallow breather, (GERD Asthma) so the Co2 retention may be a good thing.
Thanks for the sizing info, as well.
I just got a PM from someone who lives close to me and has a large Soyola that he will sell me.
Unless I hear something really bad, I think I'm going for it!
Thanks, all.

I love the soyala full face mask but I can't wear it for more than two days in a row because the bridge of the nose becomes too sore. I alternate it with the a resmed full face mask which pulls on the chin excessively but doesn't bother the nose bridge at all.

I’d say very wrong. How can you get use to it? Are you sure you are sleeping indeed?

Regarding the face sucking....I know it sounds wrong, but it's true. The Activa has been called "the lovesick Octopus" by one board member. It sort of pulses on your face, thus creating a heck of a good seal. You absolutley get used to it. It kind of lulls me to sleep.

Regarding the FP HC405, I used the 407 for a year and a half, and liked it alot. When my pressure changed, and got higher (upwards of 12 most nights), the FP HC407 started leaking like crazy, no matter what I did. I had to replace it frequently because the seal is kinda flimsy. I still keep it as a back up. It's a fantastic mask for side sleepers, and it's so cushy. I wish it had quick release clips! The headgear is great, but I wore it out quicky, having to peel it apart every time I adjusted it.

I guess I'll try the Soyola. Going broke over here!

Got you.
Well, even strange things sometimes work for others. If Activa is also acting as lullaby for you – that’s fantastic.
Regarding 405, yes, it in fact was the first mask which Apria gave me (and as I understand now the oldest one, the cheapest one etc..), but it works for me. Yeh, I think go for Soyala. Let us know about your sensations.

This, I believe, is the European version of the Soyala. Interesting that they have more options and different headgear.

tired of my loud Swift II. Was excited to get my soyola yesterday....large.

Wore it for 2 hours, woke up and switched back to the swift. Loved the quiet, but it hurt one side of my cheek. I will try again tonight a bit looser, but when loose it leaks if I roll on to my side....

stay tuned
