Water retention and OSA/CPAP??
Yes, I mouth breathe & humidifier is set on 1!
Yes I am mouth breathing so I ordered a CHIN STRAP and got it yesterday, tried it lastnight and it is breaking my chin out so I don't know about that... Hmmm... My Humidifier is set on 2, it was orginally set on 4 by the sleep studt tech, he said I needed warm air, not cold, but thanks for the advice, I'll take all I can get. I have had my new cpap machine for 26 days now so I am still a brand new /newbie user.. Take Care
[quote="Anonymous"]Go to a good cardiologist, and have him or her do a thorough work up on you. swelling of the ankles or feet, can be caused by several factors, if nothing is found there, find a good Dr to check further, don't depend on lay peoples suggestions, you might be causing damage not having the issue attended to.I made the mistake of having ankles swelling and tried all excuses, thinking I could go on line and find the answer, well I finally did, when I went into afib, had the cardio version got my heart back in rhythm, put me on lasix no more swollen ankles, Hopefully your situation isn't that serious, but why take a chance, looking forward to hear you come back with good health news.

Summary: Reduced night time bathroom breaks, reduced b/p, edema only when stopping b/p meds.
-------------------------------------------------------
I noticed before CPAP (started Jan. 2007) I used to get up 4-5 times/nite. Admitting it took awhile to be able to sleep thru the night with mask leaks & all (learning to use mask correctly). I can now not only sleep thru the nite but no longer get up to go - tho there are times when I have.
So let's say bathroom breaks are remarkably reduced w/CPAP.
For myself (male, eh) & edema:
The only time I noticed any edema was when I stopped taking the B/P meds. When I started CPAP my B/P was way outta control, even with the meds (started in 2003). It was over 200, had all kinds of tests done and no problems were found. This happened in the month BEFORE I started CPAP (waiting for machine, etc.). Diagnosed w/Severe OSA, 62 apneas/hr..
I was trying to quit smoking at the time and now attribute the b/p increase to my coping mechanism to stop smoking which was to take a nap. More frequent naps meant more apneas leading to elevated b/p.
So as soon as I got my Remstar Plus, not only was I very eager to use it, when the mask leaks, etc. would wake me - I took my B/P noticing it had decreased immediately.
I remembered the sleep doc telling me I may even be able to get off the B/P meds, sooo I tried stopping Hydrochlorothiazide? & Lisinopril. After day or two someone noticed my right ankle swelling. Just my right ankle, not the left. Starting the meds (plus ferosemide) again seemed to get me back to normal.
I am currently in discussion w/primary doc to track my b/p to see if it is feasible to try again.
That's MY story - I am stickin to it.

Hi, I went in for congestive heart falure a year ago, was administered a dieretic and passed almost a gallon and a half in an hour and a half. Mine was due to atrial defibulation. I have been on Metaprolol since to treat it. Is it possible you are going into afib and do not know it? Other possibilities is a weak valve is allowing some run back of blood after the pump.
Go to your doctor right away. This should not be happening. i almost waited too long and came damn close to dying.
Prayers for you that you find the answer.

For me it is just the opposite. I had the leg swelling before CPAP. it is gone now and I have the cutest legs in town. No more aches, no more pains. Only thing.........I had bladder repair surgery done because I was up every hour to pee. Now I find out after 6 weeks recovery from the surgery that it was the OSA the whole time.

ED, Thanks for the nice post
Thanks Ed for the nice post, The cardiologist is the next appointment I will make but I don't have a Sleep Doctor yet either, I went to my Primary Doctor's (Pyysicians Assisstant) and she ordered a Sleep Study on me so really, I don't even know how to get one, lol... In our town, there isn't even ONE Sleep Study Center in my town that excepts my insurance, they are all considered all "Out of Network" my ins. only pays 50% so I am stuck paying all that out of pocket. Plus, i had to pay for my CPAP Auto & Humidifier, they won't pay for an auto and that's what I needed, so I owe thousands and don't know how we will pay for it all! Anyway, I will try to see the cardiologist soon and so take care
