Post by Sasquatchbreath » Thu Sep 13, 2007 1:48 pm

Soyola or Activa?

I've not tried the Soyola, but can tell you a bit about the Activa from my point of view. I am a side sleeper.

Pros

rarely leaks
Is quiet
vents upward when hose it routed over the head
is comfortable
no tweaking during the night

Cons

headgear too large..has to be adjusted
bulky
rainout in cushion

thank you anyway.

I am currently using a swift II that is too noisy and blows air on my bed partners face making her want nothing to do with me.

I'm sure the sexy new Activa or Soyola will cure that

I'll take the Soyala over the Activa any day. I've owned a Activa since it first came out and used it quite a bit from that time but no longer use it today. I think
the Activa is overly hyped, people don't seem to stick with it for very long either that or they are always searching for something else. You probably need to ask those that have purchased more than 1 Activa.

I've been using a Soyala it for nearly a year and currently own 4 of them. I still have a Activa in my dud drawer.

While the Activa seals very good with light use of the headgear tension the Soyala seals just as good in my opinion with as light a strap pressure, in fact the Soyala head gear is stretchy so it is pretty hard to overly tighten it.

The Soyala is much smaller and lighter, it doesn't move or tend to ride UP like the Activa likes to actually allowing the cushion inner membrane to cut into they nares under the nose. I actually had to trim that flap on the Activa to stop that.

The Activa uses the leader hose and elbow system from the Vista (own one of those too). The Activa is much more noisy than the Soyala as most masks are. I doubt you'll find a quieter mask than the Soyala.

Like I said, I've used a Soyala nearly every night now for a year and I haven't had any problems like the velcro shredding as reported in the other thread. But I haven't had to open the velcro since finding it at the start.

Sizing on the Soyala can make or break the success of it, you want to error on the large size with that mask. Get it too small and it can leave a nice divot across your nose. The difference is you can usually adjust that out if it happens, with a Activa there is not much adjustment because of the bellows style cushion.

Somnoplus vs. Soyala

Also I wouldn't use a Somnoplus review when considering a Soyala, they are completely different masks, you can see the difference here:

http://www.somnotech.com/

About the only thing that is similar between those two masks is the headgear and part of the cushion, but even that may be different. I didn't buy the Somnoplus because it lacked the basic feature sets I look for in a nasal mask,

Somnoplus vs. Soyala

Quick-Release Clips:
The Somnoplus does NOT have any quick-release clips on the headgear, that means you will wear out and lose your strap settings at every cleaning. With any mask, make sure it has a quick-release mechanism so you don't lose your strap tension settings during cleaning.

Ball-Swivel Elbow System:
The Soyala has the best elbow system on the market, not only does it rotate 360 degrees it can also pivot out by about 30 degrees. Its pivot is on a ball-n-socket swivel with a retainer ring. Exhaust is diffused around that ring. The plus has a conventional elbow system found on masks like the ComfortGel. With the ball swivel, you are less likely during sleep to knock the mask out of kelter and cause external leaks. You can push in hard on the Soyala elbow and cause it to leak but I haven't seen that be a problem monitoring my leak rates, I've gotten the lowest leak rate with that mask over any other.

Forehead Pivot:
Also missing on the Somnoplus is the forehead support and adjustment. Compare the two and you will see there is no real pivot on the plus, the Soyala has 9 different settings and uses a 3-slot adjustment. You squeeze to release it and insert it in the next slot. One slot adds more pivot than the others. Then the forehead bar can move in and out by squeezing it at the top, you can also flip it completely upside down if the forehead bar rides too high/low.

So in my opinion after using it regularly for nearly a year now you cannot really compare a Somnoplus to a Soyala they are completely different masks.

someday science will catch up to what I'm saying...

I've used an Activa for 2 1/2 years. Have tried many masks but keep going back to it. Have bought and or traded and have 4 activas and have bought 6 replacement cushions. I have never had it cut into my nose. It is very quiet.

I cannot compare it to the soyala because I've never tried one.

I recently started using my 2nd activa after a year. I had one new cushion. I like it for all the same reasons mentioned above

I found the Soyala to be great for a short time, then the cushion seemed to lose its shape. I tried a new one, but whether I cleaned it with wipes, pure soap & water, or not at all, it just seemed to get floppy and ineffective fast (I still use it as a back-up though). For me, the wide bottom part of the cushion, straight across rather than curved upwards, also didn't help - chin not square enough ! But it's floppiness (vs the strong cushion of the UMII FF) means I have to be so careful about sleeping position, or face muscle positions, and that's no good at all.
