Had my sleep study
Had my sleep study
I had my sleep study last Monday night and it was about the worst night of my life. Being hooked up to all those wires didn't bother me near as much as the bed I tried to sleep in. I seriously question weather they got any information at all. I was so uncomfortable and slept so light that I don’t remember dreaming at all. The bed was so bad that I had lower back pain for 2 or 3 days after the test. The only thing the tech. could tell me was that I did snore. She wasn’t allowed to tell me anything else. Now I get to wait until the 12th to find out the results (if any) and go on from there. I’m not really looking forward to going on CPAP but if it will improve the quality of the sleep that I am getting and therefore the quality of my life I’m willing to go for it.
One funny thing that happened was. We had to go out of town for my sleep study and my wife stayed at her brothers while I went to do the test. The following morning my brother-in-law was talking to his neighbor and he mentioned that he also had a sleep study the night before and he pointed to my truck and said that truck was there too. Figure the odds on that when I was 150 miles from where I live and we were the only ones there.

WOW! There are no coincidences.....Or are there???One funny thing that happened was. We had to go out of town for my sleep study and my wife stayed at her brothers while I went to do the test. That is really wild.
I have had 3 sleep studies, each equally uncomfortable. I knew I had sleep apnea but did not fit the profile because I am petite. I failed the first two sleep studies because I could not get enough deep sleep to start the episodes. The third time I took something to relax me so I could get to sleep. That time it worked. I had many apnea episodes and stopped breathing for 35 seconds once.
I got my machine and a mere 12 years later I'm still learning stuff from this forum. There people know more about tweaking your treatment that any doctor or dme will tell you.
Best of luck and let us know how you are doing.

Re: Had my sleep study
Amen to that. Where do they get those beds? I think they must made from surplus racks left over from the Inquistion.Megawatt wrote:... The bed was so bad that I had lower back pain for 2 or 3 days after the test.
I have done both halves of a split sleep study in two different labs and both places had the same thin hard uncomfortable mattresses. The owners went to some effort to make the rooms nice looking and "homey" but those beds! Oh, my aching back.
Good news tho was that my CPAP experience was near perfect. I slept for nearly 7 hours despite a constant pain in my back and awoke refreshed for the 1st time in months. Hopefully your CPAP experience will be a positive one too.
I also had a horrible night getting the sleep study and the titration. During the titration, the mask kept leaking, it made me claustrophobic, and I kept waking up to adjust it. The doctor said in the morining "you seemed to have been very nervous and anxious"- yeah the mask was killing me! The bed was also tilted up at the head because the mattress didn't fit o the bed properly, so my chin would dig into my chest and move the mask around. I was really cursing it the whole time even though I was REALLY determined to make the CPAP a success.
Since I've slept in my own bed, with my own setup (without all the wires!), a new mask (Activa instead of the Comfortclassic they gave me), I have been having a much better time with the whole thing. If can fall into a routine with it, and get a good mask, (maybe get PurSleep to help lul you to sleep).. it CAN all get better!
I feel soooo much better now, and it's been about 5 weeks. My breakthrough came last week when I started mouth taping.
The waiting time can be very very annoying, i know i was ripping my hair out to get my results and then the machine. Read everything on this site that you can in the meantime! Tons of invaluable info here!! Good luck...

Sleep clinic beds
The local sleep studies here are done at a hotel! Top floor, away from congestion, center room is used by techs for data and two rooms either side for patients. It's serviced and equipped (including the bed) like every other room in the hotel except for the camera, intercom, and wiring at the bed. No alarm clock, though.
It's a great idea and you have the same priviledges as any other hotel guest - except for the 7 am checkout time!

I got the results of my study and the Doc said that I have severe obstructive apnea. I go for my titration sleep study on Monday night in the same bed as before . . . . . Oh my aching back!!!!!
I don’t see the sleep Doctor until the 24th. I wish I didn’t have to wait so long between appointments to get to get this sleep problem resolved. I guess that’s what I get for living so far out in the boondocks.

This may really be overkill, but could you possibly take in a mattress pad (foam or feather) of your own, to the titration test?
I feel for you. I actually had a herniated disc, the flu, and pneumonia 2 to 3 days after my sleep study! Coincidence? I think not.
Well, maybe the herniated disc, I guess I can't fully blame on the bed!
I couldn't fall asleep long enough to get any results, so now 3 years later I finally had a home sleep study done, much more comfortable, but still had it's problems.
Also you could ask about doing a home titration test with an Auto CPAP, you'd probably be more apt to get correct numbers, in your own home.
Best of luck, welcome aboard!

Yeah, even though my sleep study was in a hotel, the bed was still terrible. It was like sleeping on a rock (compared to my memory foam mattress pad at home) and the sheets felt like sandpaper. On my first study, I never even reached REM sleep. Hmm, I wonder why... The second time was better though.
As for having to wait, you might try contacting your doctor or the sleep lab, emphasize how bad you're feeling, and ask if they could possibly get you an appointment sooner or let you know if there are any cancellations.
The sleep lab I went to gave me the usual answer of "It takes 2 weeks to get the study read," etc; but after I sent a polite email to my doctor explaining how bad I was feeling, I ended up getting a machine the week after my second study.
Just do whatever you can to get them to see you as a person who needs their help, and not just another name on a file.

Thanks for all the replies. I’ve already tried to expedite the process as much as I can. They have been really good about accommodating me as much as they can. I just might try and find a memory foam pad that I can take with me. They told me to bring my favorite pillow so I’ll just expand on it a little. One thing I’ve learned from this forum the short time I’ve been reading it is having a sense of humor and being creative is what it takes to survive
Hopefully it won’t take me to long to get the right equipment and get used to it.
Sooo let’s all go blow it up our nose . . . . . . .

sounds like you went to my last sleep lab, it was decorated in early poverty.
Make SURE you ask for a copy of your PSG from the lab/doctor and that if CPAP was recommended that you get a copy of the prescription (don't let the nurse say she is faxing it to their DME).
Tell them you want:
1. Copy of the study so you can consider alternative therapies.
2. Copy of the script so if you decide on that therapy you can shop around for equipment, service, etc.
3. If CPAP is prescribed, contact your insurance to determine the amounts you will have to pay in co-pays. If they only cover 50%, you might want to consider just purchasing your machine outright from like cpap.com and getting like an Aflex machine with all the features as opposed to the plain jane stripped down model the DME will provide.
DME's normally will jack the price up 2-3 times over what cpap.com charges ($1200 for a sub-$400 machine) which means if you have a 50% co-pay you will pay $600 or more for that equipment. For that price you can buy the top-of-the-line machine for that.
If they woke you up to put on a CPAP mask during your study, you can pretty much be assured you have OSA.
