See this article for studies on the hormones that govern hunger and fullness and how they function in individuals with OSA. One of the studies is from Stanford and demonstrated the following: "Those who slept less than eight hours a night not only had lower levels of leptin and higher levels of ghrelin, but they also had a higher level of body fat. What's more, that level of body fat seemed to correlate with their sleep patterns. Specifically, those who slept the fewest hours per night weighed the most."
For individuals who are both obese and suffer from OSA the hormone/sleep issue is further complicated because it is not just your tested blood levels that are critical but also your individual response to these hormones. Just as overweight people can be insulin-resistant, those with OSA can be resistant to the signals indicating hunger and fullness that these hormones relay to the brain.

This is all true, and fairly well known, and it is widely believed that all sleep deprivation whether caused by OSA or overwork or any otehr cause can be linked to weight gain BUT the big question is how often does someone lose weight as a result of treating OSA with CPAP?
Answers are very mixed, probably people whose lives were terrible because they were so overtired can now find energy to exercise etc. and lose weight. Others, like myself have no such luck. many people have bemoaned their weight gain after starting CPAP! that is a sad fact the sleep docs always lie about. Nobody tells you how little changes from CPAP, its i just a necessary evil.

I have been complaint since starting therapy in Jan. this year. In this time I have lost 25 lbs to date. My energy level has increased 10 fold. Together with eating less and doing more I am grateful for the loss.
I am a 2-time survivor of cancer and when I went last week for my three-year checkup the Dr became very concerned with my weight loss. This is a sometimes sign of cancer. He was very relieved when I informed him that I was using CPAP and this was responsible. He had never heard of this and promised to look into the therapy as he also needs to lose some weight. Thankfully I am still clean. YEAH!!!!!!! jim

I am in a weight loss treatment with a nutritionist and I'm allowed to eat all kinds of fruit. What you have to keep in mind is the quantity that you are allowed to eat. Here are some examples of fruits and the quanties you can eat:
8 purple grapes
12 green grapes
1 small banana or mango
1 medium sized orange, guava, pear or apple
8 ounces (1 cup) of watermelon, papaya
1 slice of pineapple
