Removable Port Cap

Post by larryp1941 » Mon Aug 20, 2007 5:36 pm

Both my Respironics masks have a "removable port cap" but the manuals do not explain what this port is used for. Any body know?

My Resmed Mirage Activa has a ports cap too. I'm assuming that it might be to add oxygen into the mask. I don't know it for a fact though and my istruction manuals don't explain it either.

They are oxygen ports.

I think, and I hope that they are no longer designing masks with those ports.

Respironics told me that they are for Oxygen and should be closed!
Mine were open when I got my mask and the RT didn't tell me to close them. I noticed a definate difference after I closed them.

Why would you hope that? A mask with these ports can be used by anyone, including those who need O2 supplementation.

They put me on Oxygen but would not let me put it in on the mask port. Made me get a little length of plastic hose with a port on it and install it at the machine output. Told me it did not mix well putting it in the mask. Also the extra hose to the mask would get tangled and was a pain. I finally had to super glue the port cap in place, it kept popping off.

I am new to this forum and boy is it ever active! There are so many online its really cool.
I was set up 3 weeks ago with an oxygen concentrator and my DME gave me a connector with a port of the O2 that fits on my machine. I moved the concentrator into another room as it makes a Darth Vader noise all night. It makes sense not to use the port in your mask as you would have another hose to tangle in.

Also, the amount of oxygen you actually receive may be greater if you bleed it in at the mask (thereby bypassing the exhalation vents) than back at the machine. So once you pick one method, stay with it.

In the original BiPAP S/T and S/T-D (back when dinosaurs roamed the Earth), there was a proximal pressure line that plugged in there, and occassionally PSG acquisition will use those ports to monitor pressures and flows.

Wow! What d'ya know, I was on to something! I assumed it based on the placment of the ports on my mask which look far enough apart to put the canula on.

I almost wish my mask didn't have them either. They have this little rubber piece that I'm always afraid I'll loose when I take everything apart to clean. If I don't get it back on exactly the right way, some air escapes through it and makes this really annoying whistleing noise!
