Can anyone recommend a chin strap?

Post by McKinleyB » Tue Aug 14, 2007 11:21 am

I use a ComfortGel mask that I'm happy with. It came with the Respironics deluxe headgear. But I'm finding that my mouth keeps opening during the night. I've seen a lot of the chin straps on here and wish I could find a really simple solution without adding yet A-N-O-T-H-E-R strap to my scull. Is there some sort of integrated headgear with a chinstrap included that will fit my ComfortGel? Or can anyone suggest an easy-to-use chin strap that doesn't require me to adjust a bunch of velcro straps or buckles to use???

Thanks!

Here are several inexspensive suggestions. (1) Use an old neck tie, (2) Use a kerchief, (3) Use a leg out of panty hose, (4) Tape your mouth closed with medical tape.

Head sweatband.

Been using one for months.

Ace bandage is been used by others.

most chin straps seem to work by keeping you awake

ace bandage found at your local drug store works probably as well as any commercial strap you can buy, get some safety pins if you need them to hold it vertical.

However, the strap needs to be non-stretchy in my opinion, that sorta rules out an Ace bandage.

The main purpose of any strap is to keep your mandible from dropping as your mandible dropping is all part of the mouth breathing experience.

If you can maintain any kind of a CPAP pressure seal at the base of the tongue and soft palate (where most maintain the pressure seal in non-mouth breathers). If you cannot maintain that tongue-palate seal then you will have what I call cpap farting lips, at that point you are better off duct taping your mouth shut (check with RG, she has all kinds of procedures for doing this, usually takes 5-wraps of duct tape if not mistaken).

The strap needs to be worn "vertical" so it doesn't pull the mandible back in to the TMJ joint actually narrowing the airway (opposite direction of what a dental device does). Most commercial chin straps won't stay in place if they are worn vertical, so they make them so they attach from the chin to the crown of the head. This is the worst way you can wear a chin-strap, it will pull the mandible back vs keeping it from dropping.

My opinion is the best strap will be about 1.5" wide and be worn vertical and have velcro attachment so you can easily adjust the tension on your mandible.

In my opinion:

This type is good, you can see how it is worn "vertical":

This type is bad and should be avoided, it will make your OSA symptoms worse:

Another one I cannot recommend, this one they sent me as a substitution for one that was out of stock, I now NEVER allow any vendor to substitute one item for another, this strap is BIG, ugly and unusable in my opinion, I can toss it in my 4x4 and use it as a tow strap:

If I was going to purchase one, I would get the top one.

someday science will catch up to what I'm saying...

There are many chinstraps out there. If you use a standard four-point mask, then I think there is an integrated chinstrap/headgear option out there.

Surf Google for "chinstrap+cpap" and you'll get alot of sites.

I personally like my Tiara Topaz - other than the fact that I'm developing skin irritation from the neoprene. It works very well, other than that.

I just bought a BreatheWear Halo, and hope that fabric might work better. I'm also supposedly working on creating a natural fiber chinstrap...

You can also take something like this: https://www.cpap.com/productpage/cpap.c ... Style.html

And attach it directly to your headgear. You might need to add some velcro to the headgear or to the chinstrap. Not hard to do.

This guy had a bright idea....

It looks a bit cumbersome to ME, but might work for someone else.

I have had excellent results with the Tiara Ruby chinstrap.
They tend to run big, so I chose the small, and it fit VERY well.

I agree with Snoredog's recommendations, but I am wondering about something pulling the mandible back. Just sitting here at the computer I tried pushing back on my mandible and it wouldn't budge. I can move it forward with voluntary muscle action but not backward.

This would not be of concern to me except the bottom straps on my Hybrid mask put a good bit of backward force on my mandible. I always assumed this force could not actually move my mandible back and it doesn't seem to be able to do this when I am awake. I hope it is not doing it when I fall asleep.

poli-grip strips work great for me - just cut it in half - I do believe it is training me to keep ye old trap shut. I have been a mouth breather for years - even during the day. Since using the strips at night, I have noticed that during the day, I am just naturally keeping my mouth shut.

Just my 2 cents worth!

I've had really good luck with the Respironics Premium chin strap.
