Nasalair II Mask

Post by Mtnman » Tue Aug 07, 2007 8:59 pm

Hi all,

I've heard a lot of complaints about the NAII mask regarding it being noisy.

After about three weeks with my NAII I have learned that when it is properly seated in the nose, it is very, very quiet. Mine has been noisy ONLY when it was not properly seated or I was using the wrong size nasal prongs. This is a GREAT mask. Don't give up on it until you have made sure you have the proper size and it is properly seated in your nose.

Onward and upward!!!

Do you mind sharing how you seat it correctly? I couldn't keep air from escaping from the small size prongs, and the mediums were too big and wouldn't stay in my nose no matter how much I tried to shove them in.

Although it is no longer my favorite, I liked it for two years as my favorite.

I can't imagine that only perfectly sized nares will work with this mask. For me it was a simple, lube up the small prongs and stick them up my nose. Sure they were sore for a couple of days, but it was worth it.

It was a great mask, didn't fall out, little head gear, and stayed in place as I rolled from side to side and even worked when I slept on my stomach.

Of course.............it was my first and only mask at the time, so I had to make it work.

Hi!,

If anything, you want the prongs to be a bit too big rather than a bit too small. You know what happens when they are too small.... the whooshing of air escaping from around the prongs. Noisy!

For me, the Medium Plus is the proper size. I really have to wiggle them into place as it is a tight fit. I have used a tiny bit of Ayr Gel to facilitate insertion which has helped.

I also use the Topaz Chin strap instead of the headgear from the NAII. There are links on this forum to show you the configuration but basically you just use velcro straps to attach the NAII tubes to the chin strap at or near your temples, and again near the top of your head. I use one last strap to bind the two hosed together just behind my head. This allows a nice firm, comfortable fit for me. I have found this fit is just about as important as the prong size in reducing leaking.

I hope you can work this out. Once you get it right, it's great.

Take care.

I love mine also. Yes they need to be a bit on the tight side. If I use any lube the have a tendency to slide out, I use one size larger than I can just push in. I push one side of the prong in and roll it up. Insert it in the nare and let it unroll. This way I can get a good seal. You can pull it a bit so that the bulge on the prong hangs on the slight restriction at the end of the nare. I know Babette (our resident expert on the NA II) likes hers to be all the way in. Whatever is the most comfortable for you.

The noise I had when I used it wasn't from the nares it was from the exhaust of the mask. It made noise when I was breathing in or out.

I always said it was quieter than my swift. We never had a problem with noise. You can't beat how comfortable it is and nothing touches the face to pull at your skin like a mask. Wait till you see what a mask does to your face in 3 years. The nasal-aire one has a simple fix, too, just clipping off the nob on the inside and it's as quiet as my breeze, otherwise, I can hear my inhale, just like the snapp and the opti. Still like it better.
My sleeptech told me two years ago that it was the most under rated mask in the industry. That they only used the swift because it was quicker to put on and tech's like quick and simple.

What do you mean by "inside nob" is this inside the prong (pillow) part or some other part? Better yet, do you have any photos of this fix that you could post? I'm going to try and NA II this weekend and have great hopes for it.

Thanks.

on the nasal aire one, not the two. Don't touch the nasalaire II, it's perfect.
The nasal aire one has a little nob over the air holes that can be clipped off on the inside of the cannula to make it quiet. I used nail sizzors.

I too am curious about this "inside nob". I think that is no longer present in the NAII. It might be in the original Nasal Aire.

My head strap/chin strap morph, and tip sheet, are linked in my sig line. Just click on that link and it will take you to a thread showing you pix and more links to NAII tips.

I have found there is a delicate positioning dance I have to do, so the vents aren't blowing into my pillow or sheets. Once I can get into the perfect position, I find this mask as quiet as any mask I've used. If I get OUT of that position, and the vents are blowing into the pillow or sheets, it can get noisy. But I don't find it terribly bothersome.

Still loving mine!

Martini, what's your new favorite mask?

Cheers,
B.

I currently have a stash of Nasal Aire II cannulas in Small or Extra Small. Please PM me if you would like them. I'm interested in bartering for something strange and wonderful that I don't currently own. Or a Large size NAII cannula. :)

That's what I was thinking. Thanks for clarifying!

I really love the NA II but maybe someone could help with a problem. I have been using mine since 7/26 and it has really done a good job of bringing my numbers down. I am sleeping much better and longer. I expected a time to toughen up the nose and I am still a bit sore. The problem is that when I insert the prongs my nose gets a stinging almost burning sensation. I have been able to sleep through it most of the time but I am getting a bit concerned that it is not going away. Has anyone ever been alergic to the material that the prongs are made of. I am not generally alergic to much that I know of but that is almost what it feels like. I really hope it is not. The thought of going back to my ff mask will really make me depressed.

Try AYR gel or the next smaller size. You may be wearing it too high in your nose. The bulge on the nasalaire's end will 'catch" right inside your nostril. You don't need to try to get it all up in your nose.

I am using Ayr Gel in the morning after I take it off and sometimes during the day but if I use it at night the prongs slide out. Almost any kind of liquid, Humidifier turned up to high, Ary gel, Neosporin, even snot build up will make it slide around and eventually slide out. Tried one size smaller and got a lot of leaks.
