Question about pain tolerance

Post by ITeach » Wed Apr 27, 2005 8:21 pm

Okay, I have a question for all of you. Do you find that things (old injuries, etc.) seem to be more painful now that you are sleeping better? I broke my ankle 8 years ago and am having a heck of a time with it now. I went for an MRI yesterday and will get results Friday. But, I'm wondering if it hasn't bothered me as much the last several years because I was more numb and foggy? Just wondering what you all think. Thanks for all of your great advice (whether given directly to me or not.) It's been a long slow road, but now that I am beginning to enjoy being a mom of 2 young boys, I am bummed about having so much pain in my ankle and not being able to play soccer, etc with them.

Hi Iteach,

I have a healed broken leg and a bad back, but I cannot say it has been any worse since I started several years ago. I would have to say that my little aches and pains come and go with the weather, more than anything.

Perhaps now you are more awake and feel better, but now the soreness is more noticable. I am open for any suggestion on this one.

Cheers,

Ted

I find that when I'm sleeping better, I end up doing more - going up and down the stairs two or three times instead of trying to load everything into one trip, stopping at the store on the way home instead of doing without something until my regular shopping trip, etc. Not a lot more, but it all adds up. Maybe you're using the ankle a bit more, which would aggravate the injury and cause more pain.
Just an idea.

I've not noticed anything similar, but it reminds me of the old story about the little boy complaining to his mother about a blister on his foot. Mum cuffs him around the ear, he rubs his ringing ear and says what did you do that for, and Mum says at least you've forgotten about the blister.

Could it be a simple mind trick? As you're mind is worrying less about sleeping problems, it's focusing more on other aches and pains?

Dunno, but sounds plausible to me

Thanks for all your responses. I guess I'm just feeling a bit like a hypochondriac these days as new things just seem to keep coming up. I will be getting the results of my MRI tomorrow and I'm hoping that will provide some insight. I do believe that I am certainly using it more than I was. And I was just starting to enjoy running around in the grass with my kids (for the first time in my life) as the weather got nicer, too. Oh, well.
