Setting up card reader, Software FIRST TIME

Post by socknitster » Tue Jul 03, 2007 4:48 pm

OK, so my card reader arrived from Hong Kong today and I already have Encore Pro 1.8.

Nothing is installed yet. So, let me make sure I have this right:

1.) Throw away the cd-rom that came with the card reader. It won't do me any good.

2.) Install the Encore Pro 1.8 Software first.

3.) Then put the card reader into a usb port, but maybe not the one on the front of the machine (Dell) because it might not get enough power?

4.) Once everything is set up then I can figure out how to download from my smartcard.

Am I on the right track so far? Any pointers or tips on getting started?

Jen

Do NOT plug the reader in until the very last or after it has rebooted from the software install.

Install the software and reboot.
Then plug in the reader, be SURE to plug it into one of the main USB ports not into any hub. You will need to stay with that port in the future as that reader gets lost even in the same port. Best port I found to use is USB0.

When it comes back up and you plug in the reader it should prompt to install the driver, if it gives you a warning about it not being certified for Windows, hit Continue with driver install.

IF it cannot find the driver, insert the EncorePro CD and install it from there (but it should already be installed).

Thanks, Snoredog. I appreciate the quick reply. As soon as my little buddy is in bed, I'm going to have my husband help me with this. I've installed software etc before but I think I want another set of eyes on this set up. I'm printing off your comments for us to follow.

And Jen, make sure that when you open EP you click on Preferences, top right...and check the correct box (USB, COM1, etc) for where the card reader is. And also that you want to be prompted to save your info after download, it's on the same screen.

Good luck! I had no problems initially but am having difficulties now with my 3rd download...aaacckk!!

Jen, I use the USB port on the front of two different computers just fine. As snoredog said, it's when you try to plug into a USB "hub" that can cause difficulties. Plugging into the computer itself, either the back or the front, should be fine.

Reboots work wonders sometimes. I'm a big believer in trying a reboot (or a couple of them!) if 'puter things don't go smoothly.

Yes, throw away the CD that comes in the box with the reader from Hong Kong. Get temptation out of your way.

Well, I installed the software, no prob. Hooked up the reader to a usb port and a dialog box came up saying--new usb device found. Let device-finding wizard locate driver? I clicked yes. Dumb mistake.

A couple of clicks later and it was downloading the mako driver. Must have found it online? Aargh. Now I have to figure out how to delete what it started downloading (I stopped it) and figure out how to get it to get the driver off my software. Sigh. I'm not the best computer person. And my husband, who said he would help, is now sitting in the backyard sipping a whisky sour. Maybe I'll give up and go out and sit with him.

Tomorrow is my birthday (35--argh my baby-makin' days are nearly over) and I'm feeling a bit out of sorts. Don't mean to be whiny, just feeling frustrated.

I hooked up to a USB hub couldn't get it to recognize the reader.
As RG stated I hooked up to a usb port on the side of my monitor,
worked like it was supposed to.

Ok, Made Hubby come back in and help and we got it working with some fiddling.

AND i HAVE MY FIRST REPORT!

It is 9 pages and I can't decipher most of it, but hey! I've got it. This is going to be a whole new learning curve.

From what I've been seeing from peeking at other peoples data here, my data looks pretty good. My avg leak is a straight line with small blips, so that is good, right where it should be according to my mask literature.

I'm going to have to figure out what the sleep therapy flags chart is about and what flow limitation means.

I have 0 non-responsive apnea/hypopneas. My ahi's are all 2.3 and under. One night my ahi was 0.5!

So, I'm off to the races. Thanks everyone for your help. Tomorrow I'll start researching the stuff I don't know. So far, so good.

How exciting!

Jen

First you install Encore Pro. Next you install the software for the reader. After that and only after that you plug in the reader.

Now you need to go to control panel, click add-Remove programs and remove the card reader NOT the Encore Pro Program...

The install the card driver from the Encore Pro disk. After that you are ready to plug the card reader into a main USB port/ Jim

Jen, your next step should be to get Encore Pro Analyzer. It displays the data in ways that are much more useful and easier to understand than the Encore Pro screens. As you collect more data you'll get graphs that show how you're doing over a long period.

Thanks to James Skinner for creating and sharing this great software!

Sam, Good point. That is on the agenda. I want to get a little bit familiar with encore pro first and then I will add the analyzer. Thanks!

suggest saving your EncorePro reports in PDF format to a separate folder on your computer. That way if things get hosed you still have your reports.

While the report is displayed on your screen, you can select File/Print or Export to PDF. You'll only choose Export to HTML once I use a dateformat.pdf naming convention to keep them in order and easy to find.

Thanks for the tip, Snoredog. I was wondering how to go about that. I printed out the first report because I want to pore over it, but for future reference I will want them on the hard drive. Thanks!

Excellent! I would have forgotten to say this. Also, it's nice to copy and name the pdf files on your hard drive with the mask, setup, etc used to produce the result of the last day in the report.
