Never, ever, ever put on deck boards with "cement coated" nails. I built a "tree house" outside our upstairs bedroom 20 years ago and being intelligent about it, I used cement coated nails so that the deck boards wouldn't warp and pop up.
This morning I had to remove 2 boards and they were so hard to get up that I am worn out for the day.

With the new chemicals that they use for treated lumber you no longer want to use the cement coated nails. They will still rust, unless you are using untreated wood. With the older treated lumber they recommended cement coated so that they would not be destroyed by the chemicals that were used to treat the wood.

I have seeen other nails start popping in 5 years, what a pain. I think I would prefer them staying, so to quote Bart Simpson "Damned if you do, damned if you don't".

They make deck screws now. Kind of pricey, but they won't rust or come loose. Pretty bulletproof. You can easily remove them if you ever need to...
