substitute hose fix

Post by Moby » Sat Jun 23, 2007 10:15 am

Travelling round the world, packed two suitcases, one to follow two days later. That night, panic! packed hose in wrong suitcase. Mask and machine sat mutely all night as I tossed turned snorted and gasped.

Only two nights to go before being reunited with hose, rang a professional who could arrange an emergency hose - but at a price. As I "only" suffer sleep apnoea she suggested what I was thinking, a makedo hose for a couple of nights.

Handyman brother in law found some corrugated conduit pipe, which I washed well. Same bore as m/c and mask which made joining it problematic. Copious amounts of electrical tape worked eight hours overnight, but did not survive a hefty turn and twist of the fairly rigid tubing during a sleep in this morning.

Time for the distaff approach. I spent a long time perusing the condom counter at the local chemist and have chosen the cheapest and least gimmicky variety of "extra strong" condom available. Suppressed the near compulsion to explain my purchase to the check-out lady.

Also bought some conformable bandage, thin, elastic, self adhering.

Found some strong elastic bands and some paper tape.

Snipped the end of the condom (found it a strangely enjoyable experience wrapped the hose end and the machine spout in paper tape and conformable bandage to bulk them up and give them grip. Used the condom as a bridge between them, secured with elastic bands and more conformable bandage and paper tape. Reinforced the bridge with conformable bandage. Fixed the tubing to furniture so another hefty heave will merely pull out a drawer rather than twist the hose off the machine.

Hoping for a good nights sleep tonight and a joyful reunification with my hose tomorrow!

Di

PS Thanks again for the American lead, DSM. All went very well.

Well... I hope E. A. Poe forgives me:

And that is the reason, as cpapers know
In the kingdom of the air
The we carry on mask, machine and hose
To make sure it's always there....

My Mirage Swift hoses come apart all the time. I tried glue, but it smelled funny. On another one, I used J.B Weld type glue, could smell it too.

Not being as inventive as you, I went to Lowes, took my mask and found a clear plastic tubing that would work. As I laid down to test run it, it was too stiff, so I cut some small "Vs" in the tube (after I soaked it in hot soapy water to see if that would soften it. It helped, but still stiff). I used hospital tape on the cuts I made in the hose because it seemed to be more flexible and I could not smell it.

That rig worked for a few days, until I got my real hose in from the DME. I had one good hose left, but I wanted my wife to use it. My lungs are already a mess, why take a chance on hurting her?

Your ingenuity is indeed noteworthy. I even considered vacuum cleaner hose, from the Dirt Devil type. Too big.

There must be others who have had a hose go bad. Please chime in.

Wowee, RestedGal, thanks for the trophy! Lol! Just showed it off to my sister in law, who is duly impressed

I'm off to London now to meet more family and explore the "South Bank" which has been developed into a lively arty area since I last visited.

Hey, ain't it good to look forward to doing things instead of dragging yourself through life?

Di
