Can increasing pressure reduce mouth leaks?

Post by sleepytom » Thu Jun 14, 2007 7:54 am

After trying nasal pillows and after about a month finding my mouth was blowing all the air into the room, I've tried this and that with no success (full face hurts my nose) (Hybrid leaks).

My DME (what does that stand for?) finally suggested I increase my pressure from 6 to 8 to force air down my airway and not through my mouth (why he didn't suggest that months ago I don't know!)...anyway, it didn't work for the nasal pillows, and last night I again tried the Comfort FF but it leaks around the edges now PLUS killing my nose.

Tonight I'll try the hybrid and see if I can get it to stop leaking around the seal. (I really like the Hybrid if I can get it to work.)

Anyway, can increasing pressure REALLY reduce mouth leaks? Seems counter-intuitive.

Thanks,
Tom

Pressure should not be increased to reduce mouth leaks becasue:

1) there is no intuitve reason for reduction and more factual that it may make "mouth" leaks worse.

2) increasing pressure may induce central apneas

Solutions for mouth leaking are :

1) use full face mask
2) tape, glue, or somehow physically keep mouth shut
3) train muscles in back of your throat (not for everyone)

definition of DME (specifically your DME) = Dumb Medical Error

President-pretender, J. Biden, said "the DNC has built the largest voter fraud organization in US history". Too bad they didn’t build the smartest voter fraud organization and got caught.

I have watched the Hybrid video several times, and believe I'm doing all the adjustments correctly. Is there something specific you've found that helps?
Thanks,
Tom

Hi Tom,
In my case, I mouth-breathed only when my pressure was not high enough and I wasn't getting enough air. I was sucking in extra air through my mouth because I just felt suffocated. Once my pressure was increased and I could actually breathe adequately, I stopped mouth-breathing. Of course, this is not going to be the case for everyone, but at least I know where a DME is coming from for once.

Mouth-breathing vs mouth-leaking

Post by sleepytom » Thu Jun 14, 2007 8:15 pm

CollegeGirl:
I think (and read on one of the forums) there's a difference between mouth breathing like you describe it, and mouth leaking. In my case, even if I tape my mouth, air from the CPAP still rushes into my mouth, puffing my cheeks out like a blowfish (very attractive, by the way), and has actually blown the tape off.

hybrid fix

Post by painterman » Fri Jun 15, 2007 1:33 pm

sleepytom, I too had problems making the hybrid fit correctly. I finally had success when I read here on the forum about cutting off the chinstrap. i did so and it works great for me now. The distance between my chin and nares was to much and so any movement of the mask at all and it would pull the pillows away from my nares. After cutting the chin strap off, it allowed me to move the mask higher on my mouth and closer to my nose so the pillows reach easily instead of barely touching my nares.

On a side note I also found that I get better therapy by using a chinstrap or one vertical piece of tape over the middle of my mouth. This keeps my trap shut (but not sealed) so the vast majority of the air goes through my nose. My ahi is better by half by doing this in addition to wearing the hybrid.
Happy sleeping
Jon

This thread should probably be put in one about the "hybrid" but I'm certainly glad to get more info about it!

The hybrid leaks for me around the mouthpiece (nasal fit is fine and no leaks there), so I'm not sure that cutting the chin flap would help me. My problem is that even with the large mouthpiece (which is the best fit for me) I can go to sleep with absolutely no leaks, then be awoken (awaked?) an hour later with rushing air from both sides of the mouthpiece.
