Questions about puddles and...

Post by Mezzaluna » Wed Jun 06, 2007 7:44 am

I've adjusted well to my CPAP (after an adventure with pericarditis) and sleep much better now. But I have two questions.

First, is there anything that will minimize the strap marks on my cheeks? I have to pull the straps fairly tight to get a good seal.

Second, I find a puddle under my machine in the morning. My humidity is set at level 2. My husband has exactly the same machine and it also leaves a puddle in the morning. Both machines sit on laminated, level surfaces.

Thank you for your help!
Ann

To reduce strap marks, I use PAD A CHEEKS, http://www.padacheek.com/. After trying them, I will not do without them.

Ann-
I've had a puddle with that machine twice. Both times it was because I hadn't checked the thin blue gasket between the two parts of the plastic reservoir. If it gets displaced just a little bit in one spot, the "water under pressure" will escape at that point.

You have the latest and greatest "M", make your DME fix it. Jim

There is a humidifier chamber in the Remstar series with a manufacturer's defect. You have to swap it out with your DME. Give them a call.

Also check your blue gasket and make sure it's seated right. When I put the two halves together, I wet my finger in tap water, and run it around the gasket, then put them together, to ensure a good seal. No leaks for me.

Cheers,
Barbara

I will second Roosters coment on the padacheeks. I have several sets for my masks(yep, gotta have that backup!). won't even try a mask without them. Along with visiting the website, you can just PM padacheek. She's a forum member and goes to great lengths to help make you more comfortable.

Ann,

Which machine do you ACTUALLY have?
Your profile is showing a "Legacy"/"Classic"/"Tank" Auto machine and the humidifier is for an "M Series" machine.

Some of the M Series machines had leaking humidifier tanks and there was a recall to replace them.

If it is the Pre-M machine (Classic), a leak from the humidifier would be caused by the upper plastic portion not being sealed properly to the base.

It's an M series. My husband and I will watch the gaskets and if they still leak, we'll call the sleep center and ask if these were the ones that were recalled so we can get a replacement.

Thanks, everyone!

It really wasn't a recall, so much as if you gripe enough, we will fix it. Unlike Resmed's problem, Remstar "M"'s are firefighters. Jim

They will also drown termites. A feature I could have made use of in my old cave.

The tech at the sleep center said it may be because we have an elbow joint a the back of the machines so the hose will swivel and not pull. I'm not so sure.... we don't have puddles every time.

I've been checking the seals very carefully; putting the tanks in with great care; and crossing my fingers for good measure. Still, we get puddles.

Could it be because we hitch up the hoses on the headboard of our bed? The morning after I let the hose hang loose there wasn't a puddle.

M series puddles

Post by Catnapper » Sat Jun 16, 2007 12:10 pm

The M series had a problem with leaks from the reservoir of the humidifier. I found that it leaked only if my pressure went to 13 or so. Your DME should give you a replacement without charge. The connector on the back was thought to be the problem for a time, but it turned out that one of the companies that made the reservoir was off spec just a teeny tiny bit.

Your DME was playing dumb or maybe was dumb. This is a known problem. If the DME continues to play dumb, insist that he or she call the representative from Respironics to get correct information. The DME I use was on top of the problem and called me to come to get my replacement.

Good luck.

I bet it is the elbow. My understanding is the mfg has stopped suppling the elbow just for that exact reason. My did not come with the elbow and even on cpap.com they sell the elbow with a "warning" that you will get water drips. Anyway, might be better off removing the elbow to prevent damage to machine and or table top

About the leaking...

I have a brand new M manufactured in 2007 and delivered with no elbow. I got it home and it leaks. Called my DME who called Respironics and they said there is no recall and there is nothing wrong with the machine.

Um, yes, there is!

Don't know what I do next, though!

You can call Respironics directly and see what they say and/or you can tell the DME that YOUR machine leaks and they can replace it or you will notify the insurance co that it is defective, unusable and not to be paid for.

Then get one of the "Classic" models, and a heavy table to set it on. (It won't have to be waterproof) Jim
