What is AHI?

Post by patseguin » Tue Jun 05, 2007 7:57 am

I've had my M series unit for a couple weeks now and scrolled through the screens on it this morning. One of them list a 7-day average AHI of 2.0. Is that statistic the number of apnea events per hour? My machine also lists a 90% pressure of 7.9.

Sum of (apneas plus hyponeas) per hour.

The AHI stands for apnea-hypopnea index. It represents the number of these events per hour. An apnea is the complete blockage of the airways by the soft tissues in the back of the throat. A hypopnea is a partial blockage of the airways by the soft tissue in the back of the throat. Any AHI under 5 is considered good.

So, it sounds like since the machine is showing an average of 2, the therapy is working. I'm still waiting to feel better though. Is this as good as it gets on a CPAP/APAP machine? That's still 14 disturbances a night when I sleep my 7 hours.

Dunno what you started at. My AHI was 102 pre PAP treatment and with the help of the fine folks on this forum I have managed to maintain it under 0.5 on a consistant basis ... as good as it gets or so I thought until I started getting a couple of zero AHI per week during the last couple of months.

For some it just take times, for others as fortunate as me it is a complete new life.

Hang in there, your improvements may be gradual but it is far better than than the long-term alternative of no treatment (well ... long-term for some and not so long for others).

Best wishes!
