It's (scanned and cropped) from a picture I took in Yellowstone Park in the fall of 1989 (the year after the fires). We took a drive up there to see the damage from the previous year, and it was hanging out alongside the highway next to the Yellowstone river between Fishing Bridge and Canyon Village. It wasn't skittish at all and was very cooperative for some photos.
Outside of the park, it's hard to find many that will wait that long after you stop your vehicle......they don't want to become a "target".

Hey! I worked at the Yellowstone Lake Hotel the summer of '89. Any chance you stopped in at the gift shop? I worked at Old Faithful the summer of '90.

It was actually in early/middle October when that picture was taken (the Park was just about to be closed for the season). The last time I visited the Park was in 1999. It was amazing to see the re-growth of lodgepole pines since the fires......10 years earlier it looked like the soil had been sterilized.....10 years later, they were thicker than a shag carpet in some of those areas.

Other than the Old Faithful Inn (and some of the buildings in that area), there really aren't many places (buildings) I've "visited" in the Park. I've driven through about ALL of it, but it takes a LONG day just to drive through it and get back in a reasonable time. The admission fees have really gone up in recent years, too.
I can see some of it anytime I want.....on the web cameras.

I was visiting the park in 1999 with a friend of mine who also worked there in '89. My DH and I just went back last summer (2006). I can't believe how much of a difference there was! Although the west entrance by West Yellowstone was mostly charred trees. I can't remember when that fire was, but it was still amazing. My dream is to live somewhere near the mountains. In Minnesota, the closest we have are the gravel piles used by the winter maintenance crews or maybe by squinting at the clouds just right. Looking at the steam chimneys at the sugar beet plants makes me think of Old Faithful going off.

The one thing I want to know about Yellowstone is where did all the marmots go?

Kimberly,

In case you haven't previously found it, here's the link to the Old Faithful web cam.

http://www.nps.gov/yell/oldfaithfulcam.htm

The fires were in 1988.
I've spent quite a bit of time in Minnesota. I used to work for a banking computer software company and did quite a few conversions there in the early 80's (and quite a few other states).
If you're looking at the beet plants, are you in the Red River Valley area....?
I was in Ada, MN (and Hendrum) and there were lots of sugar beets piled up there.....thought I was back in Wyoming (lots of sugar beets grown out here, too.)

Don't know about the marmot (rock chucks) population.

I was in Yellowstone in '89 also

Took a family vacation in Summer '89 to see Yellowstone and Grand Teton. Spent 4 glorious weeks in hardside travel trailer so we could go into the campgrounds in bear contry. It was magnificent, tho the only time I've ever gotten the chance to go there. It was so sad when those fires burned so much of the park in '88, that we considered delaying the long-planned-for vacation. Now I'm so happy we went. Great place, awesome memories.

FWIW, Isn't Paris a place.....

Yep! I'm currently living near Fargo, ND but grew up in Crookston, which is maybe 30 miles from Ada.

I think the burned area we drove through last summer was from part of the fires that occurred in 2003. It looked fairly fresh without hardly any regrowth. It looks so bad, but I know that it is part of how things revive.

Kimberly, I was born in Moorhead because Hawley didn't have a hospital. Raised in the "Valley". Nice to see some neighbors on the web. Spend much time in DL?

Before getting married, I think I've only been there twice! (And I got married at age 36.) Now, however, we do ride through a few times in the summer on the Harley.

I was born in Minot, lived in Grand Forks and shopped in Fargo! I didn't think that many people have even heard of North Dakota!
