Does CPAP therapy cause extra gas

Post by Guest » Tue May 22, 2007 6:02 pm

I have been on therapy for almost 2 months. I have been experiencing alot of extra gas. I read that CPAP can cause this and it is called something (I can't remember what).

If any of you have this problem, what do you do for relief? I also have IBS so my gut is always a little sore, but with this extra gas, I have been in some pretty bad pain. I called the Dr. today and didn't get a return call.

Any help?

Yep! It's called aerophagia. It's usually harmless, but can be extremely painful.

The most effective solution for me was switching to an APAP. Judging from postings, APAP helps reduce aerophagia for many, maybe even most people. It does not, however, help everyone. It seems to be quite effective for those whose pressure needs vary throughout the night.

I haven't personally had much success with anything besides APAP for reducing aerophagia.

Bill

Bill--

Thanks so much for your reply. I am on BiPAP. Do you know the difference between BiPAP and APAP?

I may have to talk to my doctor about this, huh?

Thanks again!!

It's been reported on the forum that Bi-PAP therapy is often the best for eliminating aerophagia. You may just need to tweak your settings.

My sleep tech has requested a Auto BIPAP with BI-Flex to replace my APAP with C-Flex. Even with APAP I still experience Aerophagia. My gerd is under control, but I can't keep from swallowing a lot of air at higher pressures, he (my sleep Tech) seems to think it will solve my Aerophagia problem. I sure hope so, when I have a bad night, my wast sizes grows by about 2" and I feel like I have to go all day long. I also here that BIPAP usually solves the Aerophagia problem, maybe as some one else has said, you may need an adjustment, and yes APAP does help. I used to be on straight CPAP and I was always bloated. With APAP, on a good night, I swallow very little air, good luck and let us Know how your pressure changes work for you.

Dan

I can not sleep on either side because of this. Have you determined in which sleep position this happens? I am only able to sleep on my back.

I switched to a BiPAP Auto. Much less aerophagia now.

I'm a programmer Jim, not a doctor!

My condition is the same as yours. Very little aerophagia on the back but if I roll to either side it will fill my stomach in a few minutes.

I will undergo an upper GI endoscopy to check for damage.

$3 -- I wish.. Try more like close to $4. I had to pay $3.75/gal this morning.

As I reported on another thread, I had a one month trial on a straight CPAP with C-Flex and I had serious aerophagia. My Tirtation level was set at a whopping 19Cm H2O.

Now I'm on the new Remstar M series Auto CPAP with A-Flex and after three weeks I've had no Gas problems, other than talking too much! Not only that, but I see that I sometimes titrate down to 12 Cm H2O on a 90% average. That's great news for me.

As mentioned earlier your BiPAP should be capable of solving this problem, but frankly I know little about them.

Gordy.

I have seen the truth and it makes no sense!

This may be a really dumb question, but what 'type' of gas are y'all referring to when you talk about aerophagia? The belching kind or the flatulence kind? I've always assumed you were talking about the belching kind that makes you feel bloated, but thought it was time to make sure.!!

Usually refers to both the premium and the regular.
