"In addition, leads for monitoring equipment will now be placed outside a patient's pants instead of directly on the skin."

Huh? That sounds odd. Maybe the article writer misunderstood, and the hospital spokesperson was really saying the wire running to the electrode to monitor leg movements would be outside the pants, but the electrode itself has gotta go against the skin, doesn't it? That's affixed down on the lower part of the leg anyway, well below the knee.

Just when you think you heard it all...95% of us had a horrible time with our sleep studies, can't imagine adding something like this to the mix....

Yes, a good friend of someone I know obviously has osa, but "has issues" with sleeping with strangers watching her. From what she told me, it sounds like this is exactly the thing she's afraid of. Some people feel so vulnerable in this situation, what a shame that this may deter some of them from seeking help.

Did the equipment register this as an arousal?

How did it affect the AI?

Before my first sleep study I hadn't thought much about it. The day of the sleep study I got all tense and worried the tech would be some creepy guy. Having a creepy guy watch me sleep probably wouldn't result in much sleep.

I lucked out with a female tech. I really lucked out because she is the ONLY female tech at that lab and she said a lot of women request her.

Fast-Forward to my titration study. When I made my appointment, I specifically asked for the female tech. I actually had to delay the study a few days until she was available.

Apparently that wasn't noted anywhere and I was assigned a male tech, which I found out when I arrived for the study. I explained I had asked for the female. While he was seeing if something could be done, I decided I would go home if I couldn't switch techs. I'm not saying the male tech was creepy, but at that point I felt I would only be comfortable with the female.

Fortunately, one of the female tech's patients agreed to trade techs. They told him there was a female patient who preferred a female tech. He was very nice about it, but I felt bad. When the female tech was hooking me up she said tech requests not being noted in the charts is a very common problem. That's disappointing.

Heh, how these people feel they can get away with this is simply amazing to me. Unfortunatley it happens, but there are a few things that you can ask the lab manager if they have in place to deter these type of people.

1. Do you use cameras during the sleep study?

2. Do you record the video, or is it just for monitoring?

3. If your record the video, can I get a copy and how long to you archieve it?

4. Are the techs able to move the camera remotely?

5. Are the techs able to turn off the recording function of the video?

A good lab manager would want ALL of these controls in place to not only protect you from assault from the tech, but to also protect his techs from false claims of assault. Yes this does happen from time to time unfortunately, some people get so upset with their Tech, Doctor or the Sleep Lab that they feel the need to lash out at someone.

Unfortunately this is the 5 case like this that I have heard about, surprisingly 3 of them were Females. Not trying to scare you Sandy, but I know the Manager at the lab where one of the females was caught. Actually I had even met the woman once, she was very pretty and married, her victims knew no gender boundaries however, she assaulted both males and females. After everything was said and done, I believe they had about 40 victims in about a 6 month timeframe. Who knows how many before that, she had been working there for 6 years before they changed the video system.

Edit: Ack sorry Sandy, I didn't mean to imply that you were wrong in requesting a female tech, or anyone who requests a tech of the same gender. As a former tech and lab manager I completely understand and am supportive of anyone who makes that request. I was simply pointing out that these types of actions weren't limited to male techs and not simply to the opposite gender unfortunately.

I bet he pleads guilty, he will have plenty of victims in prison.

I had a tec whom I thought was a trans-gender, obviously dyed hair, large frame high pitched voice... couldn't even tell if it was going from M-> F or F->M. However he was sufficiently far from from being too involved that he/she never came when I needed him, and I had to screamm and bang when I needed to get rid of the rattling of water in the hose because the room was frozen, and sit up and yell HELP for 5 minutes when i was panicking and begged for sleep meds.
in the morning I was so exhausted from not sleeping properly most of the night that I couldn't get the energy to complain when he didn't show up to remove the gook which sticks the leads on.
He was so careful not to touch inappropriately taht he didn't touch appropriately either. However although all the techs were male overnight there was a female supervisor.
BUT people who commit this type of crime are crazy, not rational, and the bigger issue is whether there are sufficient controls in place at the hospital to monitor the process.

There are perverts around every corner and unfortunately normal people are at their mercy because we don't think like them. I guess that is a good thing or we would all be perverts.
My study was also with a female tech and I feel very sure that I wasn't messed with for several reasons. The top two being that I probably wasn't her type and that I am such a light sleeper. But anything is possible since we were the only two people there....

This is sure enough a bizarre incident and a bizarre thread. Will someone be so kind as to PM me as to what actually went on? I know of several untreated friends that are about to seek treatment, and I'd like to know whether to disclose this risk to them.

cwsanfor, have you followed the link to the article in the original post? As far as I am aware, that is the only info available.
