Hi Carrie,

I can't answer your question, but wanted to share that I will be trying the Opus for the first time tonight too. We can compare notes tomorrow. Sleep well!

Hi Carrie. I love mine. It's lightweight and very quiet.

Good luck with yours.

I've had very inconsistant results with major leak problems most of the time. It is so small and light, I would be delightd if it would work reliably for me.

Terry, the only fix I had to do for the OPUS was to tie a piece of dental floss behind the two flanges where the pillows stick out from the body.
This either draws them slightly together or prevents them from pulling apart under pressure. Anyway, it works for me.

I have been trialing an Opus for about 5 or 6 weekends now. I thought this mask was going to replace my trusty modified Breeze and on some nights it comes very close to doing just that … but as with TerryB, it has been somewhat inconsistent for me as well.

Like Steve, I had to reinforce the soft-lip cushion/pillow assembly (see here). On a few nights I have done very good on it but on other nights my software shows I have had some major leaks even though I did seem to sleep right through them. Unfortunately my AHI goes way up to 4 or 5 on those bad nights (well, it is high for me considering I have gotten used to a consistent AHI of less than 0.5 with a good number of 0.0 values using my Breeze).

When I do have major leaks with the Opus, they always occur during the last 2 or 3 hours of the night’s sleep session. I’m guessing that with the silicone material being so thin and my skin getting very oily during the night -- I just cannot maintain the seal for the entire night. I also notice that I get no leak issues at all when sleeping on my back … only during the early morning hours when sleeping on my side (so those nights where I have done quite well with the Opus must be when I spent most of my REM time on my back).

The Opus is still a keeper for me and it will definitely make a fantastic light-weight napping (or emergency back-up) mask for me. Very easy to put on and take off.

I hope it works out well for you both.

Been using the Opus since it became available, couple of months now. Very lightweight and the soft pillows made it very easy to tolerate. I sleep on my side and run the hose over my head board with the hose not connected to the headgear. This allows me to turn over without the hose tugging.

I find it does leak on occasion when on my side. Usually i just snuggle my nose into it and the leak stops. If it doesn't then I pull it away from my nose and let it snap back, just like my Activa. This is the first nasal pillow interface that I have used that I don't have to trade out with a nasal mask to give my nostrils relief.

Been loving it.

I was provided one of these with my new machine. I've had about the same kind of results as everyone else. Sometimes it seals good, and others it doesn't. I finally gave up on it. I like the light weight, but it just won't seal the same way twice for me.

Hi Carrie,
I have had my Opus now for 3 mths or so and after some mixed results I have got it working wonderfully. I was using the same method as Dreamstalker for quite a while with the large pillows and a velcro band around them with on most nights very good results but occasionally having frustrating times getting small, noisy leaks. Since Easter I have been using the medium pillows and have had an average 90% leak of 0.02 with the median leak 0.0. There have been intermittent leaks but most nights they have not even disturbed me. The only "fix" I have adopted has been to use a small loop of dressmakers elastic tape that I bring down the hose and then fit around the outside of of the pillows area incorporating the "wings" of the headgear which seems to stop them spreading and moving the actual pillows when I roll around. The medium pillows fit a little further inside my nares, however they are so soft that this is not a drama.

I have also had to back off my Humidifier just a little as a bit of moisture makes the exhaust ports whistle and sing. Also a couple of times I have not been vigilant when putting the pillows back on and have only been slightly out of line with the small "v" alignment markers which caused irritating leaks. Since realising what happened I have assembled under better lighting and this has not been a problem.

All in all, I am very happy with the Opus and am getting terrific treatment results. Quite a few times I have woken slightly and actually pulled the Mask out a bit to check it is on and working as it is so quiet, light and comfortable

Archie

Okay update:
Well when trying it on yesterday I didnt have any leaks but when going to bed the act of moving from one room to another again magically made my a mask leak. ANywho it didnt seem to leak where it was loud or irritating in fact Im not sure I wouldve noticed it if I had pinched it a bit where yall mentioned just for the small sound to go away. With no velcro fabric left in the craft drawer I was left to break into my toddlers craft stash and used a pipecleaner. It worked pretty well but Im not sure how fullproof it was as far as moving thorughout the night. Then again maybe it wasnt necessary to begin with as the leak sound was only on exhale and I couldnt notice it on inhale. I know for certain the leak was from the pillows not the exhaust holes - especially since when pinching it it went away. I do use the medium pillow and it does go up my nares a bit as well. So do you think messing with the fix is overkill in my situation?Id imagine with it shooting up there like it does with all that pressure and the pillows being up my nose that it cant escape even if the seal isnt 100%? or can it? Let this newbie know please. I used it half the night and then gave myself a break the rest of the night. I can tell it will take some time for me to get use to the direct pressure, I woke a few times reacting to it and instinctively opening my mouth which we all knows makes the sensation of not breathing 10 times worse. Anywho give me your input please. Is it worth messing with the fix or not? Oh and when am I going to magically feel better lol - I know patience ugh.

The pillows shouldn't be going in your nose just to it. Try the large pillows and see if it works better. The machine will compensate for small leaks.
As for feeling better, some feel great after the first night, some take a long time to see even small improvements. You won't see any improvement until you can sleep with the mask all night. Everytime you sleep without it, you undo all the good that sleeping with it did. So, once you've gotten the mask working for you, you should start to notice some improvement.

Last night was my first night with the Opus as well. This one might be a keeper! This is the first morning since I started back on therapy almost three weeks ago that I haven't had a stiff neck and sore shoulders. I had actually forgotten what it was like to sleep comfortably. I am predominantly a stomach sleeper and this is the first mask I have found that allows me to sleep in the position I want to sleep in.

Over the next few nights I will continue to adjust the straps; I think I still had them a little too tight last night. I can also see how DreamStalker's fix for the nasal cushion could help with the seal, so I'm going to try that as well.

Overall, movement was much more comfortable, and I am hopeful that some tweaking will help with leaks and some discomfort around the nares. And it is definitely the quietest mask I have ever used. I kept checking to make sure it was working because I couldn't hear it!

Bonnie
