Suggestions for chinstrap

Post by TiredMommy » Wed May 09, 2007 10:43 am

Went to my Dr. yesterday and he said that I am doing really good with therapy. He does think that I am opening my mouth during the night. So, I need to get a good chinstrap. I started out with the white one that is really large and then has 2 smaller straps to keep it in place. It was too claustrophobic and hot for me.

So, I was just wondering what you guys use and which one you like best.

Thanks

If you don't find a chin strap that suits you, or if you find you still puff air out from between closed lips even with a chin strap cinching your jaw up tightly, you might want to reconsider some of the other ways people control mouth breathing or air leaking out the mouth:

It's not just a matter of keeping the jaw up, although that can be enough to get the job done for some people. Blarg, for example, is having good success with a chin strap. Apparently just keeping the jaw from dropping allows his tongue to maintain an airtight seal inside his mouth.

Because that's what it's all about...the tongue. For many people, it's not about just keeping the mouth closed. If the geometry of the inside of the mouth is such that the completely sleep relaxed tongue will not stay in a place (usually against roof of mouth) to prevent air from detouring out the mouth, especially out around the back molars, then you might have to look for means other than a chin strap. Or, go to a Full Face mask to cover mouth and nose together.

Me...I use tape.

I use this chin strap:

Plain and simple and if I put it over the crown of my head - it stays secure. Now that I have a machine with a smart card, I can see that my leaks are very, very low! I also make sure it goes right at the bottom of my lower lip.

Hope the link works!

My wife made me one. Still works better then any of the commercially ones available. It's simple and very effective.

I made one from 3 in. wide Ace Bandage and like it much better than the one I got from the DME. It is loose enough for me to yawn or cough but tight enough to keep my lower jaw from dropping open when I relax. It is comfortable and durable. I put it under my lower jaw, not on my chin.

I use this one:

Make sure it's actually working for you. Chinstraps rarely do, even though I tell people they should at least try them.

It's just a flat 2 inch strap made from cloth, no stretch. She measured from the crown of my head to just under my chin. It fits nice and snug, but not too tight so it's comfortable. It rarely ever slips off in my sleep.

Did she just sew the two ends together? Sounds great!
