Find humidifier uncomfortable

Post by SlapShot » Fri Apr 27, 2007 4:16 pm

I don't know what it is, exactly, but I find the warm, moist air from the humidifier uncomfortable to breathe. I'm not having problems with rain-out; I just don't like the warmth, I guess. I'm using the humidifier at the lowest setting. More often than not, I end up turning it off. However, I've been having daily nose bleeds, so I think the humidity is important. I'm using a saline nasal spray and gel to keep things moist during the day.

Am I the only weirdo who finds the humidifier uncomfortable? Maybe it's just a matter of getting used to it (I'm still a newbie...) Any insights/suggestions you might have, though, would be appreciated!

slapshot:

I don't use the heat at all most of the time! I use it as a passover humidifier! I like the cooler air myself!

All the best,

Steve,

slapshot, I actually have a heated hose to help make things warmer!

I have the same machine you do so I know if you turn the heat off, as you did, and use it as a passover humidifier, you don't get a lot of humidity. And it seems your nose might be agreeing with that!

Some others might be able to tell you if there is some type of stand-alone passover humidifier that would give you more moisture than the M series one does without the addition of heat.

I for the most part just use it as passover, but you with nosebleed, sounds like you are not hearing, what your body is trying to tell you. Jim

YOU'RE NOT ALONE !!!

I also find the warm air uncomfortable. I was trying to get away from using any humidifier but every morning I would be sneezing and my nose running. I also started to experience nose bleeds.

I was told by my DME and by people here at CPAP talk that I had to increase my humidifier setting to (5) max. I hate it but it cured my problem. I sure go through a lot of water every night. I have to refill my tank at about 4:00am or it runs dry on me. ( my pressure is 15 )

I have gotten used to the humid air now but I still don't like it.

Hang in there.... it gets better with time.

I don't like the warm air, either, especially now that the temperatures are becoming more summer-like.

When I was using the Ultra Mirage FFM, I never used the humidifier because I never seemed to need it. Once I switched to the OptiLife nasal pillows, I started using it on 1, and that seemed to be sufficient to keep my nose from drying out.

Right now I'm cat-sitting at someone else's house and, not wanting to haul a lot of stuff across town on the bus, thought I could get away with leaving the humidifier at home. Nope -- after a couple days my nose was drying out too much and I had to go back home and get it. Even using it with the heat off seems to be better than not using it at all.

Anyway, you're not the only one!

A few of the times I didn't use the heated humidifier, I didn't have any water in the tank, so it wasn't even operating in passover mode. Being new to this, it didn't even occur to me that it would. Duh! Anyhow, I tried last night w/ water but no heat and my nose feels good this morning.

Now, i just need to solve my problem of taking the mask off and turning off the machine.... (happening less and less... )

forgive me if i'm being dense, but do you only use those products during the day? i was having problems with nosebleeds and found relief from saline rinse and gel right before bed, as well...

I think I tried the heated humidifier in the first night or two in the beginning. I didn't like it and a snoot-full of rainout probably didn't help, either. I permanently shut it off (completely disconnected the HH power cord from my machine) and haven't used it since.

The "taking the mask off in the night" is probably something every one of us has done early on in our therapy.....you'll get over it.

I use mine in the OFF position 99% of the time, if I want warmth, I use the aussie heated hose. It was 90F yesterday, so I don't use either, just cold in passover mode.

Hot humid air makes me congested also, sure glad I don't live like in GA, I'd be congested all the time.

someday science will catch up to what I'm saying...
