Burning Smell from Empty Humdifier Not Acceptable
Burning Smell from Empty Humdifier Not Acceptable
Respironics says the humidifier should not give off a burning smell when all of the water is gone and should not be used in this situation. You should have your DME send it to Respironics if it is under 2 years old when it is still under warranty.

Or put distilled water in it, if you plan on turning it on. If it runs out of water before the night is over, take steps to stop your mouthbreathing. If it goes dry because it glowing red, turn it off. I've accidently run mine empty and the smell is comes from heating the residue left over from the water... nothing more. Now I sightly over fill the tank to prevent this from happening especially in the winter months when the RH% is very low.

I just finished my second sleep study (titration) a few days ago.
I adjusted well enough, and got some great sleep, but when I woke in the morning something was ..different.
The water tank was dry, and the incoming air was a lot hotter than I expected. It was enough to wake me up, but no other damage done, I suppose.
I'm looking forward to getting "on the hose" this week, I hope. I want to sleep again!

I ran dry a few months ago and ended up with a dark spot on the bottom of the tank. It seems to be fine but it's curious that there isn't a shut off at a certain heater temp that coincides with a dry tank. Mr. Coffee (et al) seems to have figured it out both in the boiling chamber and in some newer models, the heater will turn off if the pot runs dry.

If the HH was made to boil water, your Lungs would be ready to serve by now. A HH, is designed to heat the water slightly, to the neighorhood of 105 degrees F., because warmer water, evaporates better than cold water. The idea isn't to heat the airflow much. The tank sized is suppose to be large enough to supply one nights needs, most likely if it doesn't you have a leak in the tank, or air is escaping from your mouth, meaning you are loosing treatment or a connection is leaking. So my tongue isn't supposed to look like a ballpark frank? Darned DME!
My other guess for the dark spot in the humidifier tank is that some water got trapped between the heater and the tank. Even a little heat may cause that reaction.
