First night with the Swift
From all the advise I got on what nasal pillow system to try for the real first time based on the fact I have been using the Activa and I travel a lot, I decided on the Swift. Of course I gave my business to CPAP.com our fine hosts here.
OK so after receiving it the next day after I ordered it, I gaved it the ole first test last night. It came with the small attached and I thought I would start there and change out for three nights to see wheere I got the best seal. I also just had to adjust the straps and right off the batg I liked the feel of it and the ease of putting it on and taking it off. After turning on the air, I merely had to adjust the swivel and right off the bat there was a wonderful seal and I never lost this the whole night. How wonderful, I did not get this from even the Activa! So my first impression is that I really like this interface and wonder why I did not try sooner.
Now, during the night I was awaked a few times with my nostrils hurting. To relieve it all I had to do was reposition the pillows and went right back to sleep. But this was not a good thing and may be because I was using the samll size. I will use the medium tonight. But, has anyone else had this sensation?
Assuming I can eliminate this waking up hurting, this will very quickly become my favorite interface. And the advise given me as to simplicity, the sturdiness and the packability are right on target.
Oh, one other thing, the noise was very negligable. Did not bother me in the least. I heard it at first and then never thought of it again. I either was one of the lucky ones that got a quiet version of the Swift, or my stage of going deaf is blocking out this particular frequency of sound. Either way, it is not a factor to my content as my Nasal-aire I solds like a 747 compared to this.

When I received a DVD with my Swift. One of the things it showed was how to adjust it, if you haven't watched the DVD.
My nose hurt as well. I started using a generic, over the counter saline nasal spray that really helped. I found using the spray about 30 minutes before I went to bed worked best for me.

I use the Nasal Aire II, (small also). They look almost the same. I find from time to time my nose gets sore, so I switch off to the Respironics Profile Lite Gel Mask (med). Between the two, my avg night is 8.1 hours. Good for me.
I have been on cpap/bipap for six months now and am ready for an insurance paid, new mask.
I am trying to get in my mind what I would like next.
When I first started, my nose got sore so I used a little oral gel, (tooth ache) and spread it on my nose numbing it and making it more comfortable. I use oral gel for many things, paper cuts, hang nails, and splinters. Works great. Every medicine cabinet should have some for temporary relief.
Thanks for sharing your info.

Re: First night with the Swift
Hi R&R"
I use the swift. I have tried the Breeze and newest Aura, can't take the hard pcs coming down in front of face, the cap on the Aura felt sweaty and again, the tightness on my head was very uncomfortable. So I went back to my swifty and am staying there.
I used the medium from the git-go. But I noticed I'd hear those ever present psssssssssshhhhh's leaking here and there, esp. when turning, so now I use the ''large" which is much much better. My nose isn't sore either. I use the htd hum. on '2' which seems to me to be ok.
Once allergy season starts (very soon) it'll remain to be seen, might have to tweak things.
Only problem with the swift are the straps and marks on your face, which I find to be not that big a problem. I am going to order a few ''large'' extra n/p's so I have them on hand.
As far as noise is concerned, it's not a problem, as I use a white noise sound machine in the background, so I hear nothing out of the swift or my 420E.

Judy Ann,
The old type of white noise machine makes a constant sound like a fan. The newer and fancier models make sounds like ocean waves, etc. I used to carry a small one when we travelled to block out unwanted noises from other motel rooms.
A simpler way for the Swift mask is to insert a 1" x 2" piece of nylon net into the tube of the Swift by taking the cap off of the end which can very easily be removed for washing &/or replacing. Any sizes of plastic netting larger than that did not allow for proper inhalation & exhalation. This was tested at pressures of 7 cm through 11 cm.
You can purchase nylon net at a fabric store or in the fabric section at a Walmart. Kat said the cost recently was only about 14 cents at Walmart for 1/4th of a yard.

White Noise Sound Machine
THey are called that for some unknown reason, but they are machines you can buy all over, Brookstone's, Catalogs, what not, some of them play all types f background noises, oceans, lakes, water falls, waves, rain, etc. I happen to live on a very busy road, and this helps mask the background car sounds, I've used it for yrs. So when the machine is on, (sound) it blocks out the sound of the 420E inhalations/exhalations, etc.
You can find these fairly reasonably prices, etc.
Works for me. If you're someone who has to have complete silence in the room, this won't work. I find if I DON"T turn the sound machine on, I can't fall asleep.

I have the Swift but I cannot tolerate the inhale/exhale noise of air.
Thanks,
Judy
SWIFT
I HAD THE SAME THE ISSUE WITH THE SWIFT. Now I really like it. Its important to try both the medium and the large pillows to see what is the most confortable fit. I got a blister from the large, but it sealed great. The medium pillows fit well, but near the end of the night, I felt some discomfort. It is a very quiet mask. I thought the breeze was too loud for me to use, but I thought it felt great.
The Swift is the best mask that I have used so far. However, they need to make 5 sizes of pillows; like a medium large.

Well I tried it again last night. I was in error on my earlier post, the medium was on the unit not the small. The medium was great in that I never broke the seal, just caused pain a few times when I woke to laying on it stomach down. so last night I used the large. Felt more comfortable, no pain all night but I would awake with the seal broken. I too wish there was an inbetween size. It really is a great mask though, light, non obstructive, to me quiet, easy on and off, I like the case it came in, I know RG not a reason to buy but I like anyway as it's a packing aid, and overall, it will become my favorite fast.

I have used the Swift for about a month now and I've used the large cushions since I got it. I've never tried any of the others in this category like the Breeze or Nasal-aire so I can't compare. The Swift is a bit noisy sometimes and it bothers me a little bit once in a while, but not much. Also I have found that the noise level varies for some reason. At times it's pretty quiet. I'm not sure what makes the noise level change. In any case, the noise does not actually keep me awake, so it's not really a big problem for me. In general I like the Swift a lot. It is very light, not at all claustrophobic. I am able to sleep on my side with no problem. The straps do not need to be that tight for it to stay on and seal. There are no big lumps of mask parts on the back of my head. I have no problem maintaining a seal with the large cushions. I've gotten to the point where I actually look forward to putting it on, if you can imagine such a thing, because I am able to sleep so much better with the CPAP and Swift combo, compared to how it was before. In general, except if I have a cold, I am now 100% compliant and I am completely adjusted to the CPAP program. I sleep better and feel better, although I can't say that this has made me into a 20 year old again, or anything like that. It's just a modest and gradual improvement. Also, I feel very good about the fact that I am no longer straining my heart so much from stopping breathing at night. My wife says I would stop breathing sometimes for 30 seconds, and wake up gasping. I know that must have taken its toll on the heart. I am very glad I don't do that anymore. So anyway, I really like the Swift, and would recommend it anytime over the more confining and cumbersome masks.

We're nosy people --- well, OK, I'm the nosy one -- so feel free to tell us about yourself and how the treatment has been for you.
