How does waking up effect the quality of a nights sleep?

Post by bakerboy » Sat Apr 14, 2007 8:10 am

I just completed my first month on my new Bipap machine and have a concern, I wake up from six to twelve times a night from just a very short time to several minutes. Does waking this many times effect the overall quality of a nights sleep?

My sleep study showed I was having an average of 128 apnea events an hour. My Bipap smart card reports shows and average of 1.25 apnea events an hour. I am very happy of the huge reduction however, I still do not feel a great deal better.

Prior to my bipap machine I was sleeping 9 to 10 hours a night and I still require about the same number of hours of sleep.

Am I expecting to much to soon, does It take your body and mind to adjust
to the machine? If more time is required how long did the adjustment take you?

Thanks for you help

bakerboy,

Those wake ups you are asking about, have major effects on your sleep.

You can not get into deep sleep if you wake up.

I am not having as many wake ups as I was used to, but still not feeling much better after 6 months. I actually decideded to go back to the doctor and tell him, I am still tired and waking up, I thought he would say, something to the effect of not to expect miracles. I still can not funciton normally.

My doctor was actually concerned about the wake ups, and I may need to go for another sleep study.

May I suggest you tell the doctor about these wake ups.

Also are you noticing when you wake up. And you see events happening when you wake up. (The clock on your machine may be off, so note what time you turn on and off the machine then look on your charts to know what time the events are actually happening.)

I am really impressed how much less I am waking up with the Hybrid and the deeper sleep I am getting. It has been just over a week, but I noticed a differnce, in how much longer I had energy to stay awake, even though I still wake up tired.
I can do this, I will do this.

My disclaimer: I'm not a doctor, nor have I ever worked in the health care field Just my personal opinions.

Is it the therapy itself that's waking you? The mask strapped to your face, air being blown at you etc. If that's the case, as it was for me, you just have to ride it out.

Just recently, (I started CPAP in Dec.) have I been sleeping most of the time with only one or two wake-ups a night. Man, do I feel better!

I'm becoming a strong believer in melatonin. I couldn't tolerate Ambien very well. It made me feel groggy most of the day. However, melatonin really seems to help me sleep, and has no side effects. I got mine at Costco.

Good luck dude!!!

Rick

Wake me up when this is over...
