Sleeping Pills -- Insomnia Rebound - Your opinions

Post by ABC » Thu Apr 12, 2007 10:12 am

I know that when you stop sleeping pills you will probably get insomnia rebound. By that i mean, when you stop the pills you can't fall asleep the next night because you stopped the pills.

Does anyone know if you take them for a few days and then stop will you get insomnia rebound for a day or two.

Is there a safe number of days, where you take the pills and then stop where the insomnia rebound will not occur?

Any opinions or experiences are welcome.

some sleeping medicines have a stronger rebound effect than others.
What medicine are you taking? That said, I don't think if you take anything for just a couple of days that you will have a rebound. But that's only my opinion and I'm not a medical doctor.

Taking Ambien CR. I have found it marginally better than Ambien 10mg.

They do not last like the older sleeping pills. The older ones were not as safe and don't seem to be used much.

I get to sleep but wake up 3-4 hours later and the Ambien does not seem to be working anymore.

Thank you for the opinion.

None that I have found. I get rebound no matter how little I take. Personally I have largely given up taking sleeping pills because it only means that I'll have a worse night later on. (not to mention that they will make OSA worse as well)

Anyone here tried Valerian??
I tried it for a couple of nights and didn't notice any difference. My neighbor then told me that you need to be on it for a few weeks to really notice a difference

I used Ambien for about 6 weeks regularly and had no rebound when I stopped using it. I suspect it a personal thing.

I don't think they carry the rebound effect so much as your body simply gets used to the drug after a few weeks where it is no longer as effective.

Do your own research but Search for melatonin levels and read where it drops as we age. It can also drop for other reasons such as medications for hypertension etc..

You'll read a lot of bad stuff about melatonin but none of those reporting bad will tell you what the bad is other than it is dangerous or it hasn't be tested for safety. This message brought to you by the makers of Ambien and Lunesta.

All you have to do is COMPARE the adverse side effects of Ambien and Lunesta to those of melatonin to make up your mind. Go to fda.gov and search for complaints on melatonin, I think there has been like 3 since the 1950's.

someday science will catch up to what I'm saying...

I get better results from taking placebos than Melatonin though. same for Valerian Root. I think it depends on ones system and how serious their insomnia is. Ambian works best for me but I admit that it takes bigger and bigger doses for it to work and it only lasts for bout 4-5 hours.

I am going to try a hypnotist in another week. I am sceptical but I have seen hypnotism work on others before. I have never tried it but I have a friend that has had great results with this doctor and I see such a difference in him that I want to try it.

Anyone tried it to any success? If not, I will let eveyone know what kind of results I get. I am going to spend a whole week with this doctor two sessions a day.
