Do you do anything desperate like this?

Post by roster » Sat Apr 07, 2007 4:03 pm

I love to lay on the sofa in front of the tv for 30-60 minutes before bedtime and watch part of a ball game or lions stalking Cape buffalo. The problem at that time of day is that I will fall asleep and stop breathing. Recently I have taken the loud electronic kitchen timer, set it for 10 minutes and placed it on the sofa beside my body. Every time it goes off I reset it for 10 minutes and continue watching the tv.

Do any of you have any crazy practices that you have not reported here before?

This isn't sleep apnea related, but a few years ago my ankles started hurting for no reason, even in bed. Probably arthritis. But they don't hurt if I wear socks.

But I hate to wear socks to bed because my toes don't like to be confined. So I cut the toes out of several pairs of sock and wear "half a sock" to bed. Looks ridiculous, but it keeps my ankles from hurting.

But, my sweet husband says they are "kinky", so no problem there.

Linda that must be a cute thing. Kinky and all.

Rooster, depending on your individual apnea, even 10 minutes may be very dangerous. Why not just mask up, and enjoy your nap in front of the tv?
I can do this, I will do this.

My disclaimer: I'm not a doctor, nor have I ever worked in the health care field Just my personal opinions.

I have done that and then I wake up at 3:00 a.m. and have to turn the tv off and haul the cpap to the bedroom. Not fun, plus I did not see the tv show; might as well go to bed to start with (and I often do).

And no, I will not watch tv in the bedroom - poor sleep hygiene.

Thanks for the suggestion anyway.

Sometimes I like to take a bath to unwind and relax in the evenings.

When I do I usually regret it because I usually fall asleep and start having apneas. If that keeps up too long I end up feeling worse than when I started.

I don't do that much anymore.

Linda I can relate to the weird sock thing because I have a foot problem that stems from the muscle on the bottom of the foot getting very tight and pulling, then when I get up at night or something the muscle can stretch and tear. Well, I could not find anything to keep me from pointing my toes so I bought a pair of new high top sneakers and I wore them to bed when I was having the worst of the problem! Sounds kinky but it helps. It sure does look weird though with my nightgown!!! My hubby thinks I am a hoot!

Ioannispolo,

That's the cardinal rule of good sleep hygiene: absolutely no activity in the bedroom except sleep and sex.

I recently instituted a rigid sleep hygiene routine and my bad insomnia seems to have disappeared. I'll give it some more nights and if it is still working so well, I will post in on this message board.

I have fallen back into the habit of falling asleep watching T.V.. I am in a upright position, but from the start when waking up I must be having short events. After the second time I wake up, I can stay awake till 1 A.M.

I think part of the trouble after eating blood flow goes to digestion, and my blood flow is a problem to begin with. I need a better pump, this one is shot. Jim

Ioannispolo,

Check out sleep hygiene in Wikipedia:

Or you can google it and get many hits with good information.
