Remstar auto with Cflex detects every third breath

Post by vdol52 » Thu Mar 22, 2007 4:03 pm

I decided to reset my machine and test it out by holding my breath for 45 seconds while wearing my mask. The machine did not ramp up during that 45 seconds. I thought that was the point of an Auto.
My husband just to a local medical supply distrubutor and they said that the machine only detects every third breath. Can that be right????

I have also taken my mask off totally during the middle of the night and looked to see what it would do. I laid the mask on my bed, machine still running and I watched the LED screen. It ramped up from 8 to 8.5 then to 9 then back to 8.5. The highest pressure was set at 14 and lowest at 8.

It seems like it should have kept ramping up.

I'm very confused.
Any suggestions.

I've been wondering the same things as you vdol52. I've only been on CPAP for just short of a week and have the Remstar Auto. I have my range set from 6-10, I believe. I did hold my breath, but obviously not long enough for a ramp up. There has got to be some magic that we aren't getting

The biggest issue I'm having is that when I first lay down I am getting settled in and such I have turned off the unit to get up quick to do something and my humidifier turns off!!! I don't know if I'm doing something wrong, but I have yet to have a night on the humidifier, as I must be turning it off. I thought that the heat switch was independent, but I guess I'm wrong.

If we keep popping the post up, someone will come in with an answer or two!!!

how soon after the machine turned on did you test it? I think the machine allows for a 10 minute settling period when it stays on the lowest pressure. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong.

The machine are designed for the treatment of Sleep Apnea, enter a normal sleep pattern, and then have someone stop you from breathing. That's when the test starts. Jim

you cannot fake out the machine, you can hold your breath until you turn blue.

It uses pattern matching when it responds. About all you did was store 45 seconds worth of "holding your breath in memory"...

...I can see the algorithm responding now... "crazy lady holding her breath for 45 seconds" trigger Non-Responsive Apnea/Hypopnea event, then lock out apnea response for next 15-minutes...

I've yet to read what your problem actually is with cpap that needs fixing, all I've read so far is "I've had it, what doctor should I see" and my machine only detects every 3rd breath, took it to local yocal DME and they confirmed it!

The question I have is: HOW did that DME do that? Any idea? because I don't even know how I could confirm a machine was doing that without having some kind of iron lung laying around. So I don't think your DME has one either.

Best suggestion(s) I can make:

1. Tell us what problem you are actually having with therapy and maybe we can make a suggestion.
2. Go through all the programming of your machine yourself and confirm its settings are correct.
3. If the machine truly is defective, it is warranted for 2 years.

someday science will catch up to what I'm saying...

For the Remsatar Auto the humidifier has to be restarted each time you turn the machine off, it doesn't function independently. So after you restart, hit the heat button and fire it back up, when the little green light comes back on, ya good to go........

Perhaps you should read some of my other posts that do tell my problems with theray. There have been quite a few of them and I'm just trying to figure it out like everyone else. I don't beleive that there is one answer that fits all, unfortunately.
