a weird number

Post by betty303 » Sat Mar 17, 2007 3:35 pm

Last night I had these stats in two segments, using two masks. The first 2 hr segment, I did not fall asleep and was using the Hybrid. The second segment was 7 hrs long and I used the UMFF. My machine is set for 7-12 cm and C-flex at 3.

The resulting stats for Daily Events Per Hour were:

Pressure / min. / OA / hyp / AHI

8 / 215 / 0.0 / 5.0 / 5.0

9 / 178.5 / 2.0 / 2.0 / 4.0

10 / 97.0 / 1.2 / 1.9 / 3.1

11 / 4.5 / 40.0 / 0.0 / 40.0

(90% pressure was 10, Total AHI listed at 4.6)

What gives with the 40 at 11 cm?

Thanks for your help. I am just so excited to have been able to sleep with the mask for enough hours to actually get some stats! whooppee! But this one was a puzzler.

Looks like you had 3 apneas during the 4.5 minutes you were at 11 cm; this was arrived at by doing the math in reverse. (Multiply events x 13.33 to get the AHI, AI, HI, as 60/4.5 = 13.33.) You had more apneas recorded at the higher pressures than at 8 cm; if this is a long term trend, you may want to lower your upper pressure limit, even though HI comes down with the higher pressures.

Jim (an others)

Are there events that create an apnea event on the stats that are not actually events?

There were only three times that the graphs show I briefly went into the 11 pressure range - once just as I was taking off the mask after trying for 2 hrs to go to sleep in my hybrid (I remember getting frustrated, sitting up and taking off my mask and deciding I had had enough after 2 hrs. I guess maybe I could have dozed off and gone into an apnea that woke me, but I don't think so.)

The second time, there were no events of any kind.

The third time just when in the last 15 minutes before I woke up from the night, when I stepped up from 8 to 10 for a few minutes, then into 11 for a minute or two - I had an apnea and hypopnea right at the wakeup time.

I will watch to see if I am waking at 11 pressure when an event happens. Is it possible that the act of sitting up, taking off the mask, and stopping the machine could create something that looks like an event?

I have noticed that I register hypopneas often when I am trying to go to sleep, but I am consciously awake, so it surprises me that I don't feel them. Sometimes when I start to doze off I DO feel that I am slowing down my breath and not taking the next breath and it stirs me out of the process of going to sleep.

There is a recent thread that has some comments about this experience.

Yep, I see that all the time in my own Encore Pro data. And those times just happen to coincide with the sort of times you refer to, betty303. I normally see some apneas if I'm awake while wearing the mask, both after I've just put the mask on (minus a ten minute delay, I believe) and when I wake up. I don't worry about it. (A lot of funny things seem to show up in the data just after the machine is turned ON - and have been discussed ad nauseum here.)

Regards,
Bill

Also, consider the nature of the cause and effect relationship here.

When you’re experiencing more apneas/hypopneas, the APAP is programmed to increase the pressure. If you’re having a series of episodes (maybe you turned over on your back or whatever) the machine is going to bump up the pressure and subsequent episodes will be recorded at that higher pressure.

The only way to firmly conclude that you’re having more episodes because of higher pressure is to use a CPAP (constant pressure) at different pressures on different nights and compare the resulting AHI’s.

Higher pressures can cause MORE events.....In CPAP language higher is NOT better.
You want to be on the lowest pressure possible to obviate your events.

How did you get all that data?

How did you get so much data from your m-series? I have an m-series with a smart card, but all I see is a 7-day average and a 30 day average use per night, number of sessions, apn/hyp index, and pressure.

Answer: Software.

If you have either the Pro or Auto models, you can get it, too....and see all the important details.

I do have a pro - I have an an m-series pro with a smart card. Are you talking about software in addition to the smart card? How does it interface?
