Oxygen

Post by sleepless_in_ny » Fri Mar 09, 2007 12:45 pm

Does anyone know of a support site, similar to this for people on oxygen?
OR
Does anyone know of a type of cannular that would go in the mouth rather than the nose of oxygen therapy

thanks..................

Are you a mouth breather and wondering about the oral use vs. nasal? In general, no, I don't know of a cannuala that goes in your mouth. You could always put a cannula in your mouth or the alternative is an O2 mask. A venturi mask can be used for lower O2 concentrations. Hope this helps.

Do you have evidence that your Oxygen saturation is not being satisfied using a nasal cannula? 35 years of hospital experience showed me that mouth breathers on nasal cannulas maintained their sats in most situations.

In Mouth breathers, If the cannula is placed in the nose properly and there is no nasal blockage issue, some of the oxygen will travel to the Nasopharynx and be drawn into the lungs with the air that is breathed through the mouth. Because Oxygen is heavier than air, most of the oxygen that escapes the nose when mouth breathing will "float" down past the mouth and be drawn it with the mouth breath. So in most cases, a majority of the oxygen flow is inhaled.

However, depending on your oxygen needs you may need a mask instead and the above mentioned Venti mask would be a good choice.

found the venti mask. It is a regular full face mask.
I am looking for an alternative to a nasal mask as my mom can not stand it. She is a mouth breather.
I was thinking is there is something like the hybred that goes int he mouth. HMMMMMMMMMMM maybe the hybred could be used for 02, have to look into that

I concur
There is usually enough negative pressure during inhalation to 'pull' the O2 from the nasopharyngeal into the inspired stream (this surprises a lot of people who assume a NC doesn't cut it for a mouth breather)
Providing, as BreathlessRT pointed, the passageway is unobstructed. Sometimes, people are mouth breathers because of an obstruction, though.

her O2 level seems to be okay it is just that her nose ir so raw and nothing is helping with that. No gels etc at this point.

The doc said something about a patient of his puting the cannula intheir mouth so I was wondering is there was a mouth type mask.

thanks all for your imput

Does she have humidity on the O2? Humidity is generally advised for a LPM more than 2lpm.

For the nose problems though, you could look at a product called RoEzIt. It is a non-petroleum cream for situations like that.

Brian

yes she has humidity and a short hose at night to get optimal moisture.
24x7 takes it toll no matter what.

Funny this product you mention has Emu Oil and I just sent off an email to a friend in Australia to get info on Emu oil.
I called the company you mentioned and it seems that this is also under the name of CPAP moisture therapy of which I was recently given a sample. So I will give it o mom to try.

thanks again
