Smart Card Reader not Detected??? Whassup??

Post by vdol52 » Mon Mar 05, 2007 2:43 pm

Okay, I installed all the software accorning to the specific instructions. Got to where I actually open the Encore Pro and added myself as a new patient.
Got to the PATIENT HOMEPAGE, and DOWNLOAD DATA. I took my encorepro card out of the machine and inserted it into the card reader.
Then I selected "download Data" and I get a message that SmartCard Reader is not detected.

I checked under My computer, System Properties, and Hardware, Device manager and it says" Mako DT3500 SmartCard Reader is working properly.

I closed Encore Pro, rebooted my computer, and opened it again. Same message "SmartCard Reader is not detected".

Any suggestions

When you open Encore Pro, click on “Preferences” (upper right part of page), and then “System Settings”, make sure that “USB” is selected under Smart Card Reader.

Is your USB selected?

As wolftracker said, make sure you use the same usb port. If it still doesn't work, try a different one.

Also, here is a thread where someone had the same error message. It might cover your problem:

I hope you did the "don't erase" procedure. Because if you uninstall, you might lose your data.

yes the USB was selected

I checked under Preferences, System settings and USB was selected. COM1 is selected as the direct device connection.
Would COM1 make a difference?
I also have not moved the Card reader from the original USB slop I plugged it into.

It is plugged into a hub.

What now???

The COM1 setting won't make a difference, but the "hub" will. It needs to be plugged into a USB slot in the back of your computer (or at least one that connects directly to the motherboard).

Yes I did do the unerase procedure. In Fact everything worked fine until I got ready to download the data.
I'll check that link you gave me.

Should I try changing the COM1.
I have options:
COM2
COM3
COM4
COM5
COM6
COM7
COM8

My hub has 4 ports. The other 3 are occupied with other peripherals.

Thx victoria

I guess I'll have to haul this big honkin' computer outta this desk and find a USB port on the back that is free.

Then will I have to reconfigure or reinstall the driver for the Card Reader?

Read the link

Here's what I read to do from the link Linda gave me:

First, unplug the Smartcard reader.
Then, go into Control Panel, and delete both the device driver and the device.
Then, uninstall the Microsoft SQL database program.
Then uninstall Encore Pro. Be sure to install everythng in correct order (Encore Pro first, then device driver, and lastly plug in Smartcard reader. Hope this helps.

Is this correct that if I move the Card reader to the USB port in the back of the computer I now need to uninstall and reinstall all the software

I would think you just need to uninstall the driver, and reinstall it. I would try that first. Then if it doesn't work, you can uninstall everything and start over.

I know it's frustrating, but we all went through this with Encore Pro. Ultimately, you will get it up and running.

Thanks.. I'll try that

I think we should add in the instructions that no hubs can be used for the card reader. Only direct connection to the computer USB.

Oh well, it'll be good practice for me.
Thanks guys and ladies,

Hope to be sleeping better soon.

I finally got mine working by doing exactly the steps you outlined except one difference. Even after running the setup of the correct device drivers, they still showed up as not being installed. So the next time I did it and XP started the found new hardware screens, I let XP find the drivers. I did not do this the first 5 or 6 times because I had been warned to make sure the correct drivers are there. But XP found the drivers I had loaded suring the driver setup. Once it found those and installed it, everything has been working fine.
