Anyone changing the setting on their HH while asleep?

Post by dllfo » Wed Feb 21, 2007 7:53 pm

The Respironics Auto BiPaP heated humidifier settings can be changed easily. Maybe too easy. I think I bumped mine from a 1 to a 2 last night.

I know I am an exception to the rule because of the meds I take, but I still have this problem. At night, if I wake up to answer "Nature's Call" I reach up to turn the Bipap off.

When I get back in bed, I have my unit set so that when I turn it back on the lights go off so I can sleep better. So I turn it on, reach on over to turn the HH on and usually find both buttons at the same time. When I reach for the correct button, I may hit the other button, changing it from a one to a two setting. I run out of water and get cold air for quite awhile. My wife says I was asleep last night with my mouth open. Must be from the cold air, I don't usually sleep that way.

I know I can turn the lights on (waking my wife up), use a flashlight, etc. to find the correct button, not touching the adjacent button, but I wonder if anyone else has had this problem and might have another answer.

I also know I can buy a heated hose, but I really prefer the warm, moist air.

Does anyone use the Respironics HH on a 2 setting? If so, do you run out of water? I fill my unit to the magic line every day. Yet, on a setting of 2, I run out. That seems odd that Respironics would design a HH that will not support the settings on it.

I will ask them. Meanwhile, I have to sleep tonight. I used my machine during the day today and it worked ok. So it must be my fault. Serious suggestions please. I also have the flu right now, sarcastic answers not needed.

The only way you would run out of water on 2, would be a leak or you mouth open, I would guess the latter was the cause. If so your treatment leaked out too. Jim

I keep a light on the table, so I hit the correct buttons, I was'nt sure how to move the HH up higher. I either use it as passover or on 1. Cold is good.

Goofproof, Respironics echoed your comments. They have asked me to send the unit in for inspection...get a new one.

It failed again last night...I will interested in finding out what is going on and if you want, I will post it here...

yikes I use the humidifier set on 4!
I have a Respironics M series auto bipap.
I use a hose cover and get no rainout.
I guess I need alot of humidity. I have noticed the next morning that about 1/3 of the water is left in the chamber.
It seems that most other people use this machine at lower humidifier settings.
Like Goofproof, I use a small flashlight to check the settings.

My HH tank cracked it took two days to find the crack, but it wasn't hard to find the puddle. I got a new one nine months ago, it's not been apart yet, and it won't be, no need to take it apart to be cleaned with distilled water. Jim

If it's overheating to use that water, put a couple of eggs in the tank, breakfast will be ready when you get up. Jim

As a suggestion why not get a desk lamp with a low wattage bulb to put over your machine. My Grandmother used to have one that turned on and off with just touching the base of the lamp (no click).

Another idea is to purchase some "feet", the kind you put under stuff to keep it from moving. Take on of the "feet" turn it over an stick it on one of the buttons that way we you know which button to push in the dark. You can even stick a piece of Velcro hooks on one of the buttons. You just need something to mark the button so you know which one is the correct one to push by feel.

What I did was memorize the button locations. I may be just a matter of sitting down with the machine (with the lights on) and seeing where you can place your hand so know where to move your fingers to get to the correct buttons. Kinda like play an instrument. Or touch typing... Even driving, switching the radio station without looking at the radio.

Never change it while I sleep (usa a Remstar Auto). I use a setting of 4 on the HH and I love it and have no problems with rainout, but I do use a hose cover and keep it elevated.

Or glue thumb tacks point up on the buttons you don't want to push. That would be handy for us diabetics, we could use the blood to test in the middle of the night. Jim

I thought about something along those lines, but then electricity, water, metal object getting loose and a sleepy person = bad idea.
