Post by allend » Sat Feb 17, 2007 2:51 pm

I have at least 3 to 4 a year. That has to be the most painful time using CPAP.

Well, I have a slightly deviated septum. Not enough I'm gonna let ANY surgeon near it!

I'm not really having a sinus infection per se, BUT I am having one devil of a time w/sinus (and nasal) irritation due to an xPAP humidifier blowing COLD air up my nose!!

With the advent of this really cold weather in Michigan my Humidaire 3i just plain isn't cutting the mustard set on maximum and including taking as much of the hose as will fit under the covers w/me.

I had one night of a REALLY chapped length of nasal passage on the right, plus congested, swollen right nasal passage and right sinus. I had to give up the xPAP for one night and used it less than 4 hours the subsequent 2 nights before I could stand ANY air from the xPAP.

Now I'm still waking up each morning w/a drippy, sneezy nose and uncomfortable, unhappy right sinus for several hours. The rest of the day I am then fine only to have it start all over again after a night on xPAP.

Prior to using my APAP with heated humidifier I got 2-3 sinus infections a year, even with a humidifier on my furnace. Since starting my APAP I have had only 1 sinus infection since 10/03 when I started with APAP. The only thing I (and my Dr.) can attribute it to is the use of the heated humidifier with my APAP since that is the only thing that changed from the time before using my APAP.
I use a setting of 4 on my humidifier.

Hi DN,

Yep, me too. This current one seems to be the worst yet with pains in my teeth, gums and a constant sinus headache and the Dr. make you beg for antibiotics.

Lately, the past few months, I've actually had trouble lying on my side, like when watching TV. Something fills up and stuffs me up. So, I try to watch in the den and not in the bedroom. The bedroom for some reason has the least amount of air flowing and we've been keeping a window slightly open.

I've had sinus infection after sinus infection especially since December. Finally had enough of my GP and got a referral to an ENT who took one look and said that I had a sinus infection... gee I could have told him that! He's got me on a sinus rinse with an antibiotic in it. They called it Wilson's solution.

sinus infection

Post by Catnapper » Sat Feb 17, 2007 4:16 pm

This is the first year in my entire life that I failed to have a sinus infection that started in November and usually lasted until February. Could it be the CPAP? I think I will mark that in my list of improvements! It is working for me.

I did have a cold in January, but it was not an infection.

Has anyone tried the nasal wash. My husband uses it and it works really well on his sinus.

I don't tend to get a lot of sinus infections, but I can only imagine that humidifiction with xpap therapy would be absolutely essential to avoid them. I have a friend who swears by saline mist/gel to keep sinus infections at bay.

I had my first sinus infection diagnosed about 10 days ago, after a week of non-stop sneezing and dripping. No coughing, not much pressure, just that darn sneezing/dripping, and of course blowing my nose too often.

Nurse Practitioner diagnosed it as sinus infection, Rx'd antiboitic and decongestant capsules (horse pills!). I certainly have a better understanding and empathy for those who complain of of a sinus infection.

I failed to ask if this will lead to MORE of same. It's a virus, but it seems that once you get something, it will be baaaack! Prior to that, the skin around my eyes itched (towards nose), and I had a very mild cold. I have no idea how or why I got this NOW. I had been 'run down' and not eating properly, but that's nothing new for me

I'm using Neosporin and Saline gell or spray (alternating between two products), but nasal membranes are still VERY sore. I went without cpap treatment for a week. Am feeling as close to 'normal' as I know it, and resumed treatment 3 nights ago with no ill effects.

Since this was "a new one" for me, and it REALLY threw me for a loop, I am anxious about being susceptible to them in the future. Anyone know if that's the case?[/b]

If you were given an antibiotic, then it's bacterial. You say you have no pressure? How do you know it's not just a miserable cold that's viral and you never needed the antibiotic at all. I have lots of pressure in my sinuses under my eyes but I also have pain in my teeth and gums.

My RT is wondering if it's from the bipap. It could be as it may cause irritation and irritation is never good because it makes you vulnerable to lots of things. In my cases, I have a feeling that my sinus infection that I got on Dec 28 never completely left and I've really had trouble sleeping ever since. Perhaps 10 days on the Levaquin 500 didn't get it all out of my system. I think that happens to some of us.

I have a question. I am using distilled water in my humidifier. Perhaps something is wrong with the distilled water, some businessmen are real scumbags and you never know what they will do. Or, once opening the water, should it be refrigerated?

Are we better off using our own filtered water? As far as mineral deposits ruining things, what can it ruin? The tank? The hose? The mask? Some water is loaded with minerals and maybe if you have that kind that cakes up if you let it go, you shouldn't use it. Another thought, bacteria in the Pur water filer attachment attached to the sink. I use it for sinus lavage or maybe I should be using distilled water for that.

Its no wonder our airway passages are signaling for attention, irritants like cpap air blowing up our nostrils, gels we put in for easing discomforts, saline nasal sprays, and if this doesn't work for us we reach for our med supply decongestants, pills for runny noses etc. course then its the humidifier lets try dumping a cup of water up oar noses every night, woops maybe thats not enough, lets see if we can increase the amount. get the picture, just my experience and unfortunately know the alternative.

I suffered w/a chronic sinus infection for 2 1/2 years. I was referred to an ENT who did corticosteroid injections high into the nasal passage plus 10 days of oral antibiotic on 3 different occasions. He then suggested surgery for a slightly deviated septum. Not this old gal!!!! Its been deviated like this for 60 years and this was the first time for a problem this bad.

Believe it or not, my family doctor's PA cured the problem for me. She scripted 30 days of an antibiotic (I don't remember which one). 30 continuous days of antibiotic did the trick tho!! Haven't had a sinus infection since - unless you would want to classify this recent problem I mentioned earlier in this thread as a sinus "infection".

I have major sinus problems, and the nasal mask just seemed to make it worse. I chose to use the full face mask and I love it. Those that have bad sinus problem might want to give the full face a try.
