NEW USER STARTED CPAP THERAPY 2/10

Sleep Study Results.
Sleep Time: 303 minutes
APNEAS: 11
HYPOPNEAS: 256
RDI: 52

My wife said last night that my machine got louder and it sounded like I was gasping for air ? I woke up took mask off and went back to sleep without mask. Woke again a couple of hours later put mask back on.
I have been on cpap 6 nights.. Machine Res-med APAP, Mask full face mirage. My pressure from sleep study said my apnea free pressure was 14cm. The first five nights my machine was set from 4cm - 18cm. Last night I tryed 10cm - 18cm ? I noticed that when I get up at night to go to the bathroom my pressure at that point is 10cm - 10.cm. Is my machine able to jump up fast enough in a apnea event from a lower pressure to higher pressure ? Also I have noticed sense on my machine in the morning I feel really relaxed like I have had a sedative ? I had felt groogy the first few days really bad ? Today saturday 2/17 I do not feel as groogy ? Why am I feeling so strange sense being on machine ? How long will it take me to completely adjust to cpap and for my body to re adjust its chemistry ?
Are my hormone going to rebalance ? My doctor I thought that sleep apnea was causing me to feel bad, low testosterone, low dhea, higher cholesterol ?
Please help me with your input and suggestions.

Welcome to the world of hose-headedness!

I am not able to answer all of your questions, but I will do what I can do:

The time it takes for you to respond to your therapy will be different than the time I've taken. You may be quicker to respond, or I may be. There are many variables involved, one of which is the number of variables (take THAT, you mathematicians out there!).

Some days you will feel "not groggy" when you get up. Some days you will feel groggy. Life is like that, CPAP or no. You will feel better during the day, or so I'm told. Really, I've noticed that I yawn less now than before. I have noticed some slight, but profound changes over the last four months.

I had an easier time than many adjusting to using the machine. I've used masks for filtering air while working with chemicals or outdoors in high-pollen-count times, so the idea of having something on my face didn't wig me out. I have a lot of diaphragm strength, as I played trombone for several years as a kid and bicycle a fair bit to this day. That said, it was still an adjustment to feel that hit of pressure when the machine started every night.

My ability to focus is certainly improving.

Hi Bluetocker,

If your titrated pressure is 14 you don't need to have your max pressure set at 18. I'd suggest bringing that down to 16. If you look on your machine in the morning before noon, using the following buttons you can see all your figures during the night. What are your 95th percentile pressure figures. (Pressure) and AHI, AI & HI figures?

If you notice the machine running at 10, it's possible that that's what your 95th percentile is (what your pressure is for 95% of the time - or lower) but the figures will tell you. Probably leave the min at 10 until you see what your figures are.
