NEW ON CPAP... GROGGY IN MORNING ?

Post by bluetocker » Fri Feb 16, 2007 4:32 pm

Hello my name is Gary, I am a 43 yr old male... I have been on an auto cpap machine for 5 nights as of 2/16/07 still waking up ? My pressure in the sleep study was 14cm, doctor said in sleep study report that at this pressure I was sleep apnea free ? My question is relating to how I feel in the morning... I feel very groggy through out the day sense being on cpap ? Am I just adjusting after years of poor sleep ?
I feel like I have had a sleeping pill the next morning ? My machine is a res-med vantage auto, res-med full face, mirage mask. Please advise... How long does it take body to adjust fully to cpap therapy ?
Thanks...
Gary

Hi Gary, and welcome.

Sometimes it does take awhile to adjust. And you probably feel groggy because you were in a deep sleep (like when you took a sleeping pill). That should pass in time.

Also, what pressure is your machine set for? If it is Auto mode, perhaps the low range is too low.

If it's in straight cpap mode, then maybe EPR (exhale relief) needs to be adjusted.

Do you know how to access your data? If not, try this:

Usage Data and Efficacy Data:
Press the Left and Right buttons and hold for 3-4 seconds. The Efficacy Data menu will come up on the LED screen. From there the button use is pretty self-explanatory. Just be sure to do this before noon and these machines work on a 24 hour noon to noon clock. After noon the Efficacy Data for that night goes into the averages.

The Efficacy Data will give you your average pressure, average leak and AHI, AI and HI for the night, week, month, 6 months and 1 year.

For the clinician menu, it's the center down-arrow button (black) and the righthand button (red) together for several seconds.

bluetocker,
I and many other people have felt much worse in the beginning than before starting. My theory is that the small iritations of the system (mostly mask leaks) rob us of more real sleep than the apnea did. Make sure you get the mask leaks fixed or get a new mask.

Good luck

Gary - I'm a newbie too and and just completed day 35. It gets easier especially after you find a mask you can sleep with. I'm now using the OptiLife (9 days) and I am able to sleep better each night and wake up less groggy each day.

I also loved to sleep in on weekends, but now I am awake and ready at 8am, an hour after I usually get up weekdays!

Best of Luck

-Rich

Gary,

Good luck with your therapy. I'm also new, started about 10 days ago. Interestingly, the first night for me was great. I woke up full of energy. But that hasn't happened since.

I'm just learning to sleep with the mask. I sleep on my side. I've been using the nasal pillows and the weight of the mask and headgear pull the nasal pillows to my left, irritating my nose. so I've been using my pillow to prop up the head gear. I think maybe there are a lot of little tips like that that help you to adjust to the therapy. I've picked some of the up from this site. I'm also going to talk to my DME, to try a few different styles of masks.

Once again, good luck.
