How to choose a better mask

Post by Rich Boston » Fri Jun 13, 2025 3:56 am

Hi, first newbie post here. I'm looking for advice on how to chose a better mask.

I started using an ASVP PAP with an AirSense 11 in mid-February with a React Health Rio II Full Face Mask. I use a full face since I'm a mouth breather when sleeping. Have been longer than I can remember. The Rio II works ok but occasionally leaks or vibrates waking me up. I also have morning dry mouth which I've tried to reduce with more humidification. I've got it set as high as I can without the hose gurgling and waking me. The chin strap I tried interferes with the mask seal. I asked Regional Home Care's coaches about switching to a nasal pillow and using the chin strap. They recommended Eson 2, Rio II and Dreamware nasal pillows.

Question 1: Is a nasal pillow / chin strap a good solution? If not what do you suggest?

Question 2: How do I choose the best nasal pillow? There's no way to try them out before you buy them.

Thanks for your support!

Some background on me...

I have central sleep apnea. Starting around January I set a goal of getting 7 hours of sleep, up from 6, and have been doing well against that goal. My wife says the ASV PAP has greatly reduced snoring. The noticeable and welcome change I've noticed is that my cough headaches have stopped. The only changes I've made that I can attribute their ending are more sleep and using the ASV PAP.

I'm 70 YO, 5' 10" and weigh 161 pounds. I swim 1-2 miles a week and do resistance exercises for 5 days a week.

chin strap a good solution?
Only for a minority. Even with the chin strapped tightly, the lips can still open.

Many of us tape our lips closed. There are many types of tape designed for this purpose. This is not the most popular, but it is the type I use - https://www.amazon.com/LUO-ZHENG-TAO-SH ... ref=sr_1_1

CPAP humidifiers do a decent job of preventing dry nasal passages. They do a poor job of moisturizing the mouth.

Read, read, read ratings, specs and photos at our forum sponsors page - cpap.com.

Snoring indicates there is also an obstructive component.

Unfortunately, there is no "best" nasal pillows. The best are the ones you will use.
