Taped mouth, pillows mask, power outage

Post by ozij » Sat Mar 29, 2025 10:08 pm

So now it really happened.

I was fast asleep when I started waking up gradually to a feeling of "...Hmmm... I really can't breath... why would my nose be so stuffed???? ... " I took off the mask - and there was total silence - power outage in my apartment. And my nose, by the way wasn't stuffed at all.

Like in sleep obstructed breathing: when CO2 builds up, and you try to breathe in oxygen and can't, your brain wakes you up.

Same thing happened to me a few nights ago. I don't tape my mouth, but I woke up not being able to get a good breath.

Power was out about 5 hours, and I found out that my backup sump pump battery was shot.

First time in years that I slept without my machine. I woke up cuz I was worried about the sump pump battery and sure enough...

This happened to me, exactly as you described.

Nasal pillows and mask tape. It was very uncomfortable.

Then I had to stumble around and get my battery setup. Never again.

I upgraded my battery to an EcoFlow Delta 2. It has an EPS feature (similar to a UPS). Now, I'm plugged into it all the time, but drawing of the grid. Should a power failure occur, it switches to battery without service interruption.

Now I sleep through power failures.

Why people aren't considering ups/eps when they buy backup solutions is beyond me.

Just last night something similar for me.
I had turned off SmartStart yesterday morning because I needed to run the blower at a much higher than "cool down" mode to get some tiny drops of water dried out of the hose. It wasn't a LOT of water but it was enough to make some gurgling sounds which disturbed by sleep the night before.

So I dried out the hose but forgot to turn SmartStart back on (really like and use SmartStart)......and I did notice the slight difficulty moving air without SmartStart to help me start the machine but it really wasn't all that big of a deal. There were zero feelings of suffocation. It took me 5 minutes to realize and remember why the machine wasn't on.

The moral of this story......having no power won't kill you like people think it will.
I know it may feel like suffocating to some people.....we won't suffocate.

We've lived through so many hurricanes and power outages that we decided we'd had enough, and got a whole house generator. The thing kicks on automatically and is natural gas powered and so far the hurricanes haven't managed to knock out the natural gas lines yet, knock on wood. I hate we are so dependent on the power grid in modern civilization (for anything, nevermind just to breath well at night) but I guess without modern civilization we wouldn't have CPAP machines at all.
