Tidal volume varies

Post by mets123 » Tue Jul 11, 2023 8:49 am

I live in the north east and my tidal volume is usually around 500. I am in Denver now and my tv has been running around 380. No changes were made at all, could it be due to the altitude?

Compare your respiratory rates for the two locations.

Suggest comparing the minute ventilation rates for the two locations. The minute ventilation is the volume of (respired) air per minute. (Combines respiration rate and tidal volume into one factor.

As far as respiration rates they are the same, the minute ventilation has decreased.

Well that’s not what might have been anticipated considering the altitude change.
Do you have any data on changes in your blood O2 saturation?

(Ultimately the whole purpose of the respiratory system is to maintain adequate O2 saturation and blow off excess CO2.)

I’m on vacation and don’t have access to my oximeter.

You didn't say how you are feeling. Excess sleepiness during the day? Energy level?

Chicago granny, thanks for your reply. Feel the same, no changes. My respiratory rate is the same, no leaks . Just that my tv is around 380 instead of my usual 500.

What's the same? Feeling crummy or feeling energetic or something in between?

If tidal volume is the amount of air
And if there's less air at higher altitude
Doean't it stand to reason that tidal volume would be lower?

Or is there something I'm missing?

The machine has been tested to adjust to air density up to 9500 feet. Denver is about 5200 feet. So, the user should be breathing air of the same density at both locations.

Agreed Chicagogranny but there must be a reason why this is happening.

Good point of curiosity. I would like to see the OSCAR Overview chart of TV for the first few days at elevations one and two.
