doo-rag -> my hair is a mess

Post by roster » Sun Jan 28, 2007 7:33 pm

My headgear is making a disaster out of my hair overnight. I bought a 94-cent doo-rag at WalMart and put it on under the headgear last night. Hair looked much better this morning but the doo-rag left a big mark across my forehead.

Is anybody using a good doo-rag or skull cap or anything else that they can recommend? Needs to be lightweight and cool. It gets very hot and humid here in the summer.

BTW, I am a male but I don't care what I look like when I bed down with my cpap.

(Any good insults about my condition will also be appreciated).

I use a Buff. It's basically a tube of stretchy fabric and there are tons of ways you can wear it. I originally purchased one to wear when exercising outside in the cold - I needed a way to cover my mouth and a scarf is too bulky. It worked great for that.

I don't use it specifically to keep my hair in place, but that's an added benefit. I started using it as a makeshift chinstrap with one of masks (I'm not even going to attempt to describe how I did that...). I also used it to hold the tubing of my Nasal Aire II in place - that worked great.

Go to google and search "buff". It should be your first result. I got mine from REI.

I've used a hard hat liner before, a little warm. Jim

Those Buffs look neat. Thanks for the tip SleepySandy.

retiredpete, I see I can buy a skull cap at http://sparklingearth.com/products.asp?category=100001. The "Air Flow" in black is what I would want. I wonder if it would leave a mark on my forehead?

Anybody tried a satin kippah (http://www.skullcap.com/)? Would my Jewish friends take offense?

I need to get something in the next few days because my hair is not behaving well in the mornings even after shampooing. I am leaning toward a Buff because they claim to be breathable (yeah that's what I want to be at night also), to wick moisture and to be seamless so they won't leave marks on the forehead.

snorin747, my skull will catch up with your's someday. Unfortunately for me there are some bad scars on my scalp that aren't going to look pretty when exposed.

What about something like this? It's coolmax so it would not make things warmer at night. http://www.performancebike.com/shop/pro ... ?SKU=16691

Thanks for another good idea. I wear socks (on my feet) with CoolMax and they really wick the moisture out and keep the heat buildup down.

Rooster, maybe something like this would work - and not too expensive. Doesn't look like it has elastic, and she makes them in different material - even sports team logos.

I just bought a fabric remnant at WalMart of a meshy, stretchy material. I am hot-headed (in more ways than one) and this fabric breathes. I got it because my hair was such a wreck in the morning and the straps were pulling my hair out. I wish I knew what the fabric was but any mesh-y type will do but not anything too slick or it won't stay on your head. It is sort of a rectangle and it just put it on my head, not tied and then put my headgear on. So far it's worked like a dream, and my hair is growing back in.

We could start up a new company:

"Hair Club for Men with CPAP"

Hi Rooster,

You're right about it not leaving marks - none at all.

I don't know if you noticed, but there is a "UV Buff" listed on the website. It has Coolmax (and UV protection in case your bedroom is particularly sunny...).

My Buff is the regular one. It's breathable, but if you're concerned about your head getting hot, maybe the one with the Coolmax will work better.

There is a product comparison chart on the website. It seems the UV Buff is listed on the comparison chart as the Summer Buff.

Sandy

My father was bald as I am also. He used to say "GOD made a few beautiful heads, The rest he covered with hair". I wish he would have had the opportunity to know about apnea and the therapy to combat it. He could have lived for many more years. I am working on it.
Thanks Jim
