Direct answer:
As for things running in families, remember that although Albert Einstein was brilliant, it is said that his distant relative Frank was actually a monster.
https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-con ... r%20airway.Smoking. Smokers are three times more likely to have obstructive sleep apnea than are people who've never smoked. Smoking can increase the amount of inflammation and fluid retention in the upper airway.

You have covered it sufficiently.
Re: How can 1 person in the family have sleep apnea
My son and I both have sleep apnea, and both use machines, I'm sixty something and he's 40 something. Neither of us have ever smoked tobacco but I've smoked weed since my teens, my son has never smoked it. Go figure.Marcusstephen wrote: ↑Thu Dec 15, 2022 10:57 pmI’ve been curious for a long time as to why I have sleep apnea and no one else in my family or extended family has it . I’ve looked at lifestyle differences and come up with one habit that may have a bearing on why i have it. Now I maybe barking up the wrong tree here and some people who continue with certain habits may lob in some resistance here, but , I smoked cigarettes for 15 yrs and enjoyed weed for about as long.
That is the only thing I can identify that separates my lifestyle, diet and habits from others in my family .
Thoughts ?

Re: How can 1 person in the family have sleep apnea
That kind of alleviates my concern about weed having contributed however I’m inclined to see substance in the previous comment about smoking causing fluid build up and/or inflammation in the soft palate and muscles in the throat. Of course genetics is probably in the mix.Conrad wrote: ↑Sat Dec 17, 2022 8:37 amMy son and I both have sleep apnea, and both use machines, I'm sixty something and he's 40 something.
