Wellvue O2-ring privacy concern

Post by papnapper » Thu Dec 15, 2022 7:11 pm

On the day I received my Wellvue O2-ring, 3 months ago, I was concerned about the possibility of personal identification data being sent via the internet to ????? :?: , when plugged into my PC.
I sent 3 emails to the makers, the support and the software people asking what was in the unusually large connector of the supplied USB cable. I have never received a reply.

I decided never to plug into my PC but I have been using the app on my Android phone. The only permission I had to allow the app was Bluetooth UNTIL 13/12/2022, It suddenly asked for permission to know my location! Then, the next day 14/12/2022, it also wanted permission to access " Photos / Multimedia / Files storage ... in the cache".

I would not be posting the above if I had received a reply to any of the three emails I sent either.

Regardless of whether Wellvue & associates are trustworthy, hacking happens, so if anyone can advise us users how to avoid the risk, please advise.

I am not being paranoid with my concern as I am simply following the common advice to avoid having personal information published, in order to avoid spam, fraud, hacks etc. For instance, cpap-talk.com warns against it if you edit your profile.

You're more likely to leak personal info via your phone than via your PC since your phone is always connected.

The big connector is likely an UART (Universal asynchronous receiver-transmitter) because the o2ring is likely a serial device.

Some versions of android prior to version 12 required location in order to use Bluetooth. (Source: https://source.android.com/docs/core/co ... etooth/ble )

Finally the vihealth app wants to store data from the o2ring into files on your phone. So it requires permission to do so.

I disclose that I have been diagnosed as paranoid recently when I went to the doctor to get my latest cholesterol results. The truth is that he did not actually tell me I was paranoid, but I sure as hell could tell that he was THINKING it.
