What machine to get?? HELP ASAP
What machine to get?? HELP ASAP
hi everyone,
I am writing for my mom who is in her 50’s and was diagnosed with sleep apnea.
Can u guys help to know which machine we should get and is worth the price?
ResMed S9 AutoSet with a heated humidifier for $125 + free heated hose. (Deluxe) Philips DreamStation 1 APAP Machine with heated humidifier for $160.
(These prices are from a non profit organization working with my mom on getting a machine) (through Insurance).
Also what type of face mask is best? A full face one or only nose one?
Do we do the no heated hose or heated hose?

Re: What machine to get?? HELP ASAP
The ResMed machine would be your better choice here. Even though the S9 is very dated, it will most likely give you effective treatment.
Mask type is going to be a purely personal preference. There are full face masks, nasal pillow masks, and nasal masks...plus hybrids of all of those. If possible you should try one from each category and go from there. Personally, I prefer a mask that has minimal contact with my face. I've been using the ResMed AirFit N30i hybrid mask for some time now and it's the best fit for me. I do not have a problem with mouth breathing, however.
The heated hose is not required. I've never used one and my therapy is just fine. It can be helpful for preventing rainout or just for general comfort. Again, it's a personal preference.

Re: What machine to get?? HELP ASAP
Welcome! Please be aware that Philips has recalled most of its machines. You can read about the reason, plus other good information, here:
https://www.cpap.com/blog/philips-recall/
A Dreamstation 2 would not have this problem.
Before you buy a machine, ask for the number of run hours that are already on it. If the machine is getting toward the end of its life, you might want to keep looking. Most machines will last for 5+ years.
If the machine can accept a heated hose, then that would be a good idea. Your mother might or might not want to use the heat feature -- it's really a matter of personal preference -- but with a heatable hose she would have the choice. But some people -- including me -- don't use a heated hose and don't feel we need or want one.
Masks are also very much a personal preference. Does she breathe through her nose during the day? If so, a nasal mask or a nasal pillow mask might work well for her. If she breathes through her mouth fairly often, though, she'd do best with a full-face mask. But within each of these categories, there are lots of different masks, so she would have additional choices to make.
Please come back to let us know how we could help you help your mother as she starts PAP therapy.

Re: What machine to get?? HELP ASAP
As others have pointed out, the DreamStation 1 APAPs have been recalled by PR. So it would be critical to establish whether this machine has been refurbished after the recall in order to rid it of the problematic foam.
That particular fact is why I would strongly recommend getting the Resmed S9 AutoSet. At the time the AutoSet was made, it was the top-of-the line APAP/CPAP in the Resmed line and just as "deluxe" as the DreamStation 1 ever was.
It is worth pointing out that the S9 is compatible with Oscar, so you or you mother will be able to properly monitor her therapy.
As for mask choice: That's really quite personal. I'm fond of nasal pillows masks (I bounce back and forth between the Swift FX and the AirFit P10), but my husband can't stand them. His personal favorite is a full face mask even though he's not a mouth breather except when he's got a significant upper respiratory infection.
As for the heated hose: If it turns out that your mom doesn't like the added heat, the hose temp can always be turned off, making the hose into a non-heated hose. But if you have a non-heated hose, you can't turn it into a heated hose. Based on that, I'd say go for the heated hose.

Re: What machine to get?? HELP ASAP
Would it be relevant to know if the person diagnosed with the sleep apnea would need a BiPAP/Bi-Level machine versus a 'standard' Auto CPAP such as the ones the OP mentioned? I admit I don't know if a standard CPAP could give 'adequate' therapy if a BiPAP/BiLevel was what may have been prescribed.

Re: What machine to get?? HELP ASAP
I get the impression that the company offering the cpap and working with the insurance company did the diagnosis, and that the good advice here was based on the binary choice between machine a and machine b.Grumpy48 wrote: ↑Fri Dec 16, 2022 7:04 pmWould it be relevant to know if the person diagnosed with the sleep apnea would need a BiPAP/Bi-Level machine versus a 'standard' Auto CPAP such as the ones the OP mentioned? I would hope so anyway.

If you weren't so eager to spout nonsense "advice" at people, we wouldn't be so worried with your telling people to look at their PMs (a wholly unnecessary thing, given that the forum alerts people to messages.
Bless your heart, Merry Christmas to you.

Something to consider is contacting the Reggie White Foundation for assistance with getting a CPAP. Many of us have donated equipment to them, which they make available as best they can to those who need help acquiring a machine.

Re: What machine to get?? HELP ASAP
Come now, it really is nobody’s business if I direct a someone (esp a newbie) to thier pms. I value personal safety too much to discuss exchange of private info on the board.palerider wrote: ↑Fri Dec 16, 2022 9:44 pmIf you weren't so eager to spout nonsense "advice" at people, we wouldn't be so worried with your telling people to look at their PMs (a wholly unnecessary thing, given that the forum alerts people to messages.

Nothing unnecessary or redundant when I sometimes use that as an added measure for things like telling them they posted private info while posting a chart. No need to draw additional attention to that publicly especially for the sake of personal safety.
Sometimes private means private and the Royal We will just have to deal with it.
I rather enjoyed the 9 days without unwanted interactions like your bah humbugs.
Bless your heart too Pale Rider. I hope the holidays bring you an abundance of quality time spent with friends and family. I sincerely mean that.

Thank you for the timely holiday reminder of a generous charitable organization.Jlfinkels wrote: ↑Fri Dec 16, 2022 9:48 pmSomething to consider is contacting the Reggie White Foundation for assistance with getting a CPAP. As an Eagles fan I should have known about this foundation by name but only knew vaguely of a charity organization. Much obliged.

Re: What machine to get?? HELP ASAP
This is a great deal if the machine does not have a high number of machine hours. (You can ask the seller or find videos on youtube showing how you can check the number of machine hours.) The heated hose may come in handy. I liked the S9 AutoSet so much that when it was discontinued, I bought a second one.
This is going to depend on whether the user can keep the mouth shut during the use of CPAP. If a nasal mask is used and the mouth opens or air leaks between the lips, the therapeutic pressure may be lost.
A heated hose can be set to no heat. Take it in case the user finds heat useful.
