CPAP machine with COVID

Post by Deep sleeper » Sun Mar 27, 2022 6:41 am

Hi,
Thanks for letting me in the group. I just want to know if any CPAP users in this group came across COVID ?
My case - I have been using CPAP for the past 1.5 years, no issues having good sleep. 2 weeks before I was tested positive (despite 3 doses of vaccination) and a week later it became negative. But I still have sneezing, dry cough and flu problems.
I consulted with the GP and following his instructions, but no improvement. I suspect this CPAP machine usage may cause this issue to me. not sure..anyone came across this situation?
Planning to go to specialist, but it takes time.

My symptoms now:
Covid negative (Multiple time tested)
Dry cough, sneezing and flu.

Just trying to use machine without water.

Any help would be highly appreciated.

Why would you suspect your CPAP is causing these symptoms?

Why the no water thing?

Perhaps your nasal mucosa now need the added moisture that using water in the humidifier of the machine can provide.
Wouldn't be impossible.
The symptoms of angry nasal mucosa from being dried out are typical allergy attack like symptoms.

It is also possible that you may be having some long covid symptoms but I would at least try adding moisture to cpap use because it just might help.
Note...it might take several days for the symptoms to abate if the mucosa are really angry.

Are you saying that you tested positive for covid but now you have the flu? I would say that if you have the flu then you have your answer as to why you have a cough and sneezing.

Good thing for you that you had three doses of the vaccine, if not for that you may not be here to ask questions.

My CPAP is a great comfort when I have those symptoms. I crank up the heated humidifier (I don't normally use the humidifier) and it relieves coughing and nasal congestion. It really helps me rest comfortably.

As for length of symptoms, it may take a while after covid and there are people who have ongoing symptoms for quite a while.

Hope you feel better soon, but I don't think the CPAP is the cause of your problems.

Doubtful that CPAP is causing your symptoms. Lack of humidity can cause your nose to overcompensate for the dryness sometimes. If you're like me living in the South right now, you're immersed in pollen season. Not many people are able to live in the South this time of the year without needing some H2 blockers, Flonase, or just suffering through it.

when I had Covid the other week (not really bad symptoms) I was actually happy I had the CPAP. Whenever I have flu/cold symptoms using the CPAP has been a relief as it typically clears my nasal passages and allows me some rest albeit the first 10-30mins can remain conjested until the machine hits its stride (assume its the humidifier). Just my 2c

I had double Covid Pneumonia in October 2020. I was admitted to the Covid Unit about 15 minutes after I got to the ER. My son dropped off my CPAP machine and I used it the first night I was there, Oxygen in a nasal cannula and my mask on top of it. Unfortunately I needed to be on much higher oxygen after the first night and couldn't use the CPAP for the rest of my stay. There is no reason not to use the CPAP with a cold/ Flu/Covid.

COVID tests have "false positives" sometimes, meaning the test says you have COVID when in fact you don't. They also have "false negatives" sometimes, meaning the test says you do not have COVID when in fact you do. Multiple negatives tend to provide assurance that you don't have it -- if you ever really did.
