Mouthpiece for Mouth breather ?

Post by Andre56 » Thu Jan 18, 2007 12:18 pm

I'm a mouth breather and even if I wear a Chinstrap, I'm not sure if I really close my lips throughout the night. I have read about mouth taping but I have beard and I do not want to peel it… (ouch!)
Did anyone tried to wear a mouthpiece with or without a chinstrap. I thought of it yesterday, and before trying it, I was wondering if anyone tried it. If not, what do you think of the idea ? Is this stupid ? Could it work ? Is it dangerous ? Could there be any problem with the teeth ?

There are several mouth-piece units designed to keep your mouth from
dropping open. The main features for most of them are:
1) Set the lower jaw forward a bit.
2) They have a "shelf" that you are to park your tongue on.

I have tried 2 of the purchased units and the one made from Wal-mart
sport mouth-pieces (You can find it on this forum).

The reason why I cannot use them is drool. My saliva glands open up
as soon as I put one in.

I have a full beard and tape. It really isn't as bad as it sounds. Feeling good in the morning is worth a few seconds of uncomfort removing tape.

I agree Jeff. I have a goatee and yes, a few seconds of discomfort is a pain in the arse, but it is worth it. Actually to help minimize the discomfort, I pull the tape downwards when removing.

Andre56,

Just got back from the drug store. I bought two rolls of 3M Transpore tape 1" width. Cost a $1.50 a roll and will last me for probably 4 to 6 weeks.

My trick is to tear off a piece that is longer than the width of my moustache and place it over my mouth and facial hair. I fold over one end so I have something to grasp and rip in the morning.

Bets the hell out of feeling like s*&t the next day.

Have you tried a Fisher and Paykel Oracle? I tried one, but preferred a full face mask (432). I think the Oracle would be great as long as you stick with it, and perservere.
