Resmed Black Particles in Water Tank
I use the Resmed Aircurve 10 bipap. The machine is only 3 years old and is taken care of. We don't smoke and only distilled water is used.
Multiple times now after a night of sleep when I go to add more distilled water there have been black particles. See the images attached. At first I just ignored it. But after Googling I saw the Phillips recall.
I understand the recall is just for Phillips. My machine is not a Phillips machine.
1)But what I am wondering is does this look like the same kind of "black dust" others have talked about ?
2) have other Resmed users had something similar?
3) Should I be worried from a health standpoint?
4) Has anyone successfully got their machine looked at or fixed?
5) if not foam? What could it be?
6) any other advice?

Re: Resmed Black Particles in Water Tank
Resmed says their foam is safe if you don't use Soclean. They say using Soclean will void the warranty. Even if your machine is out of warranty, you don't want to oxidize the internals.

I use the same machine that you have. From your post it would appear that you do not empty your water reservoir but only add to it? I would suggest emptying the reservoir when you wake, setting it out to dry, and filing it each night before use.

No. I don't use anything but a mild soap.

Re: Resmed Black Particles in Water Tank
Those particles look similar as ResMed users who have had their foam degrade because of SoClean use.
See this topic (one of many):
https://www.cpaptalk.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=177081
Ensure the filter is in place on your device
Assuming it is, then the particles are likely to be coming from a component within the machine and the likely candidate is the foam. Take the machine a part, take a look at the foam disk, it's on the blower.
If it's broken apart then that's the problem.
- Either take it out and keep using your machine, or have it replaced.
But, if it is the foam, and you haven't been using SoClean, then it's a mystery why the foam has broken apart.

Re: Resmed Black Particles in Water Tank
Upon closer inspection, comparing your particles to the degraded foam particles from the other topic, they look very dissimilar.
The particles from the other topic, you can clearly remnants of the gas bubbles that give the foam the springy, soft quality. They look like little legs on the particles.

The particles in your pic, don't the same at all, they are all trapezoidal with harder edges.

Re: Resmed Black Particles in Water Tank
Where do you get your distilled water?
Try a different supplier, or distill your own.
I am not fully confident with any local retailer selling actual distilled water.
I tried a couple of gallons of RO water from Fresh Thyme,
because the MANAGER said it was "the same as distilled".
He was full of crap, and I had to de-lime my tank.
The shape of your bits suggest broken pieces of old distilling or packing apparatus.
Somebody is cutting corners.
You may be able to use this water--after filtering it. I see no mold.
