Remstar Auto and Pro CPAP Differences

Post by snorestats » Sat Jan 13, 2007 5:07 pm

Curiosity Question....

Does anyone REALLY know what the differences are between the Remstar Auto vs Plus vs Pro are?

How about the M-Series basic vs pro vs plus vs auto?

My gut feeling is that (for each of those 2 product lines), the guts of the machines are 100% identical and that the programming for each is different.

Anyone ever open up one of these? (doubt it... just asking)

The only difference I can see is $5.00 in price

Actually, $110 difference (at least at CPAP.com). My question is... if someone has a Pro2, can the firmware be upgraded to make it an Auto?

Well I have opened up my Pro 2 (tank) and not my APAP (tank) but give me time and I will. The PCB for the Pro 2 and the APAP are probably the same based on the markings on the board but one day I will open up the APAP and see what differences there are in components loaded on the boards. Actually the Pro 2 is sitting on the table with the screws out as i plan to blow dust out of it.

The question might be better - what do you want in a machine? If you or your doc want to monitor data other than how many hours you use it each night then the Pro 2 tank (Pro m series) or the APAP will give you it.

If you want a machine that will adjust the pressure based on apneas you want an APAP.

If you want a machine that will adjust to altitude you don't want a Plus (not a feature I really care about but a travelor would).

No... I'm simply curious.

I just want to know if I could take a pro2 and upgrade the firmware to make it an auto. Does the PCB have a chip on it that looks like it is removable? If it does, then it's possible.

I'm sure the factory has a way to upgrade the firmware... I'd like to know how they do it.

the Auto is the automatic titrating machine, it gives you Sleep data along with automatically finding your ideal pressure (in most cases).

the Pro is the higher end but straight cpap machine, it records Sleep data nearly identical to the Auto but is only a straight cpap machine. You can use it with reporting software for self-titration (trying pressure increases/decreases) for a better AHI score.

the Plus is just like the Pro but does NOT have Sleep Data recording ability, only gives basic compliance information. It is the low end straight pap machine, reason most DME's and insurance issue it (puts more money in the DME's pocket).

So there is a difference besides cost, the Auto has the most features and uses a Mass Airflow Sensor (MAS) to monitor and maintain pressures.

Sorry... I meant are there any differences OTHER THAN the firmware on the boxes? Something tells me that it is possible to turn a Pro2 into an auto.

Patrick,

Thanks for that... but my question is really more simple than that.

Can the Pro2 be turned into an Auto with a Firmware change? Can an auto be turned into a BiPap?

I think that the machines are horses of differnt colors. My answer would be no. Because if that were possible the DME's would all go out of business.

His question is can he take a Sow's Ear and make it into a Silk Purse, by a simple hockus-pockus of a firmware upgrade. But he doesn't want to buy the company to get it, just maybe steal it. Jim

Since it's not a Chinese MP3 Player, I doubt it.
